Always worth a quick heads up with stuff like this.

Looking to purchase some A/T's for the L200. The rear (current) H/T's are now on the limit, so it makes sense to replace all 4 with a decent set. The L200 is my shooting hack, so it does see a fair bit of off road use during the season - I also have a weeks' shooting in Scotland coming up in Jan, so it makes sense to sort myself out now as it will be used in the rough stuff pretty much every day.

My default choice are the BF Goodrich A/T's - I had a set fitted to my previous Disco 2 and they were excellent.... but interested to know if there are any recent developments/new products that would also be worth considering?

Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks in advance

Got Grabber AT2s on my L200 and they are superb. Seems that some prefer BFGs to Grabbers and vice versa. Have heard positive comments from other L200 owners on Khumo KL71s and Maxxis (???)

Those Grabber AT2's look good...and are a fair bit cheaper than the BF's as well.

I've got Grabber AT2's - been simply brilliant in the current weather.

Heading down the grabber route. Reports on them seem very positive.

The only advantage I could see for the BF's were the longer tread life, but given that my truck is primarily used for shooting and the odd longer trip, I can't see the benefit when compared to the extra cost.

The only issue I have now is the fact that no one local to me has any! Stocks are out pretty much everywhere and I have been told that it will be the New Year before they are available again.

Grrrrr!

Try camskill or mytyres, IIRC they both have stock.

Grabber's are pretty good, currently running Cooper ATRs on my Navara at the present, they've done brilliantly in the current conditions and were recommended to me by someone that had them fitted to their L200.
Lot cheaper than the Goodrich as well.

I ordered Grabbers about this time last year and had to wait until late Jan for mine to arrive, mail order company kept saying the shipping container was stuck in the docks but i wasn't convinced...........

Anyway, they were definetly worth the wait, the last week had really proved their wort on my Disco 2, really impressed.

I took advice from Andy Sargent on here (Think he's changed his username to something like sarge4x4) on which tyre suited my needs best, only wish i'd ordered them from him.

I need 4 new tyres for my defender. Its on 16 inch alloys .. 235/85/16 are the size I will be going for as they are a bit cheaper than the 265/75/16 and cant really see the point of really wide tyres on it (or am I wrong). Thinking about Bronco Grip Edge :: BLK 116Q which are only £75 a corner and the pattern looks good with around 60/40 road/ offroad bias. Has anyone tried these?

If they are the Bronco that mke the grizzly claws then they were very suspect quality a few years ago, delamination etc. Think they are retread remould iirc.

Go for something from Insa or Kumho .

Hiya,

I'm an off-road instructor (BORDA BST) and a RTV competitor with 18+ years competitive experience. The one thing I can say is that you are likely to get loads of differing answers! It all depends upon the conditions you want to use them in.

I have tried BFG, Yokohama, General, Pirelli, Michelin, Mudplugga, Insa Turbo, Blackstar and seen almost every other brand and tread in use in the UK in both competition and on clients vehicles at our course. AT types have a very wide range now from almost road pattern (eg new General Grabber AT) to off-road pattern. Some MT patterns are less capable than some AT so there is overlap.

I loved the old BFG Trac Edge as it was a great pattern (big outer blocks and little inner) and lasted very well (80k no probs). My experiences with Insa Turbo are very good (on 5th set), they do a BFG Trac Edge copy the 'Traction Track'(like the bronco ones you mentioned - but Bronco didn't answer any of my emails or calls and that was when I was trying to buy them...)

For road and some off-road training I currently run 265x75x16 Cooper ST (an all-terrain pattern) which are a more suitable for UK general countryside (woodland, leaf mould, non-sandy topsoil etc) than the BFG AT which are excellent in sandy/gravelly conditions but *tends* to fill up quickly and not clear as well in clay/mud. The Coopers wear quicker but have larger tread blocks and voids to grip and release mud. In a direct comparison (same hill & vehicle) the coopers were more confident in climbing the steep, rutted, muddy and 'claggy' wet conditions - the BFG AT got there but needed more 'mothering' :-)

As to your question about tyre sizes - I won't be buying the big size again as it is too wide really and 235x85x16 are a better compromise but I got them cheap at 75 quid a corner.

Hope this helps and isn't meant to start a tyre war.
Cheers
Gavin

Massive thanks for that from me. I'm an off roading newby, so information like that has just saved me a lot of cash, trial and error.

Thank you Gavin. I am tempted by the Bronco as they seem a good fit for me. On the tyre size .. still not sure to go 235 or 265.

Just had a look at my existing tyres and they say 205/R16 104S .. I cant see the aspect number. Why is this? Also 205 seem narrow for a defender.

Hiya,
thanks for the positive comments - Our old joke is get us 3 off-road experts together and you'll only get 5 answers smile

205's are 80 aspect ratio (i.e. the tyrewall is 80% of the tread width) and are the standard 'small' tyre size on the swb land rovers, old Disco's & RR's. You can fit a 225x75R16 on a Disco without any major issues but 235x85R16's are too big and will contact the arches when in use (unless you do a lift of at least an inch and a little trimming of the rear arches).

On a Defender/90 fitting the larger diameter tyres (235x85, 265x75 etc) will change your speedo, but it is simple to replace the drive screw at the gearbox end with one for a 110 which comes on the bigger tyres. I think it cost me about a fiver and took 10 mins to swap over.

Oh, be aware that Bronco don't have a great reputation in the last few years. One LR club friend had paid for some tyres and was unable to get any response either. In the end I think he called the bank and got them to recall the money. Things may have changed now... YMMV!

Cheers
Gavin
