WHICH CLASSIC 4X4 FOR UP TO £6K
Discussion
Want to get a classic 4x4 to use myself during the winter to get me to work and a bit of offroad fun.
Thinking about:
Series III land rover
Range rover classic
Or possibly more modern defender or range rover
I have seen some beauties for this money but may be too good to use in a bad winter.
Whats everyones view or am I missing something as I am new to 4x4's

TVR owners have to go Land Rover.
Your option is a Range Rover (Classic!) or Defender.
It isnt my idea. It's the law.
For that money you could get a very nice example of a CJ7 perhaps, currentyly bucking the trend pricewise(appreciating) and something a little different for your money as opposed to the usual mire of depreciating rubbish that the sheep like to drive!Your option is a Range Rover (Classic!) or Defender.

The fact I have a CJ for sale has nothing to do with it! ( I'm serious, mine isn't for you!)
My advice would be to look for a motor at the 4k mark. Then invest in a set of 5 off road tyres and wheels. Should set you back about £600. Then spend another 800 renewing the suspension (£400 if doing it yourself). Then the remaining £600 for sorting out any niggles, welding or adding toys.
You then will have something that will be reliable, practical and capable.

What exactly do you mean by "too good to use in a bad winter"? If you're talking about getting mud into radiators, brakes, joints and anywhere else else it's liable to wear components down then the price of the vehicle now won't have much bearing on the cost of replacement parts.
If, on the other hand, you're concerned about damaging the bodywork and triggering depreciation, then there's plenty of places you can offroad whilst avoiding this risk.
You could get a decent Discovery 1 (300 TDi) for about £3k or an off-roading one for about £2k, then spend some money on bits - of buy another one for £1k for spare parts . You could also get a quite reasonable Defender for £6k or possibly less. Off-roading will do far more damage than general winter use.
Another vote for the rapidly appreciating and increasingly rare Air Portable in SII or III guise (or Lightweight for dullards;)) or even a standard SII. Whatever you do though, please don't bugger about with it and go shoe horning in a big V8, make a roll cage out of scaffolding and fit tyres off a tractor.
This Range Rover classic looks nice:

I am a fan of the G Wagon too:

Regards the G Wagon, you should be able to pick up really nice 460 (the 80's one, looks just like the brand new commercial one) for that price. Get the best one you can because, as i found out, they are expensive to fix.
Look for a 280 petrol. They drive like a really solid range rover classic

'First car' was an SIIA lightweight, with truck cab. Bought it at 15/16 with a view of getting it ready for when I was 17, but got bored with the noise when thrashing around the field and sold it for a profit!Gassing Station | Off Road | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
