Having run a 2.5 petrol Sport, 1998, I'd look out for a 4L....engine IMO not as robust and unstressed as the bigger lump, fuel consumption bout the same.

Yep, when I looked into it, the 4.0L is the better engine, loads more power/torque and the fuel economy is only slightly worse than the 2.5. It also sounds great when gunning it off road smile

What kind of Jeep?

Cherokee or Wrangler?

In short the 4.0 litre is the better engine. It sounds better, is more powerful, more torque and will drive better. Smoother, more refined and more pleasant.

That said, the 2.5 will be slightly more economical, although there is probably less in it than you'd like.

It's also worth noting that while the 2.5 is down on HP compared to the 4.0, it still makes good HP when compared to a Land Rover 2.5 diesel or petrol. It's torque figure is lower, so it'll need you to drive it harder than a turbo diesel Discovery, but I suspect overall performance is rather similar if not better due to the Jeeps weighing less.

Loads of old threads about XJ Cherokees on the forum.

Look Here

The 4.0l is cheap, capable, fun to drive and will cost a fraction of a comparable Land Rover.

Mine had problems with ABS, rumbly diff, heater, saggy rear springs, front UJs and water pump.

Having said that, it only cost £1200 for a 60,000 miler with FSH.

Avoid the diesel.

I bought a 99 4.0L GCJ with all the toys for £1800 with 66K miles. A lot of car for the money, 20-22mpg.
