Hi Guys have had several defenders, most with pto winch's which have been very useful.

Now the one I have now has no winch and I have got it stuck at home a couple of times even on muds, it would have been really easy and quick to get it out if it had a winch ( had to dig it out and use farm jacks / waffle boards right pain in the rear end !!)

So should I buy another pto winch or just an electric, only really need the winch for occasional use but would like it to be reliable long term as the landrover is a keeper.

Advice please

Thanks
Phib

Seen something like this looks interesting but may not be reliable long term ?

Quite good value at £400 including the bumper. It is probably a Chinese copy of something but there seem to be a few of them about and for self recovery 6hp and 12000lbs is plenty.

The cheaper winches tend to be slow and the solenoid pack can give up the ghost but this is not expensive to replace. I would say go for it, certainly a lot cheaper than trying to retrofit a PTO.

Correct, but is the only scenario where any electric winch will outperform Hydraulic/PTO winchs. ie you've dunked it, and you can at least get yourself in a postion to be able to look at the engine problem rather than in 3 feet of water ( or 2" if it is LR V8!)

My Mog has a hydraulic winch, and have had the same comments. However, given that it will happily plod through water at windscreen height(6ft + the snorkel is 3 feet above that) and there is nothing electrical to keep the engine running, I don't worry about it too much.

I almost made the apostrophe comment too!
