I have various OS maps for Surrey, with Byways checked and marked on them.

I have most of the same OS maps in Tracklogs, so I can quickly pull together itineraries on them.

I also have a Tomtom. I can't get said itineraries onto it...

Until today!! biggrin

Thanks for some help on the Tomtom forum, I have discovered an application called Tyre. It's really designed to let people create itineraries in Google Maps (which sadly doesn't show Byways) and then import them into the Tomtom, but it will also let me import a file in .gpx format (standard GPS file which Tracklogs can create) and then save it as a .itn Tomtom itinerary.

The long and short of this is that next time we go off-roading in the Surrey Hills, I should be able to create an itinerary file for the Tomtom that will take us from the end of one lane to the start of the next automatically!

Geek mode and mud mode in blissful harmony! bounce

However, if only I could get some "full time evaluation" version of the maps from viewranger from the internet, so I could drop this on my Android...

At £150 for full UK, or £30 per map area it's a bit too steep. smile

Agreed, it is a bit pricey. Took a long hard look at options before I purchased. Got the entire UK on the basis that if I didn't, I'd find myself on some remote Scottish island within a week.
Really good mapping though, and some excellent features.

Did you get it for Android or something else? How do the maps work, I see they can be downloaded or sent on media. How big is the folder which holds the UK maps? Was there any kind of activation on the maps? I'm asking so many questions as I'm currently trying to find something for a technical numpty (who lives 300 miles away from me) and will have to talk him through the entire set-up to get it working.

Had I wanted to pay for memory maps and pay for a handheld GPS, then you may well be right. It wouldn't, however, be the best solution for making use of what I've already got for free.

I came across this yesterday http://www.opentom.org/Event_Logger which (among other things) will allow you to do the reverse, i.e. you drive a route, or are driving one of your itineries and have to make a detour (for example), and will then dump your route as a gpx file which you can pull off the tomtom.

motion-x gps, is around two quid for full verion on itunes, and it shows all byways, and you can overlay previous routes and ones made in memory map to follow it. I love it.

Anyone know of a good one for android, which will allow overlay of MMO's etc? One that isn't ridiculously expensive...

Memory map and Road Angel works best for me, and waterproof to boot.

I got the full home PC version, which can be transferred to pocket devices as standard. The maps are standard OS maps, but allows waypoints and tracks to be drawn on screen either freehand, by lat/long, OS grid or (limited) place name search. From there it'll give you headings to steer, cross track error (I think!), and a few other bit of raw nav data. When used on the move it'll give you speed, DTG, TTG, elevation and so on and it automatically logs your route.
It's also got the option of a 3D "fly-through" of a route be that drawn or logged.
Not sure of file size but it's pretty big. I've got the UK split between two 4GB SD cards for in the car.
