Just curious really. But the other day (Thurs I think) I saw a jacked up blue/silver one on huge wheels heading south on the A34 just by the M40 roundabout.

It looked really good IMO.

Now I'm a huge fan of American style trucks (Rams, F150's, Bronco's and Silverado's) and I'm a long, long time Land Rover enthusiast and owner.

So anybody able to school me in a little Mitsubishi L200 info and tech?

What are the like to drive and capable of?

Thinking along the lines as a fun daily rather than a work horse. Sort of a budget Dodge Ram or Land Rover alternative.

Are they any good off road? Are lift kits easily available for them? How strong are the axles? What size tyres can you run on them? How tunable is the engine?

Sorry for so many Q's, but thanks in advance!

My BIL has a king-cab and while I've not tried it off road it's fecking horrible on it. None of the character of a defender and less comfortableeek

The Navara's supposed to be leagues better.

I'm pretty open minded as a rule. But I'd say there does seem to be a lot of scare stories and major issues that I've read so far. Far more than you see or hear for Landys if I'm honest.

I can't actually remember hearing any positive comments about them.

Is there an equivalent Hilux or something?

I bought a (new) new shape one. 40,000 miles in 2 years, only costs other than fuel was a set of tyres and road tax. It didn't need any extra oil or even screen wash between services! Far more comfortable than a Defender, far more reliable, and didn't let me down in limited off road use. And I've got a Defender 110 now, so I'm not anti Defender....

The trouble I have with the Hilux is the look of them. In the late 80's they looked fab, then they softed the grill and made it not so. Then they just went ugly/boring looking.

I admit the one Top Gear used looked good, but it's way too new and to get the look way too costly.

The L200 Warrior does appeal, I like the shape and the bonnet scoop. It does the "monster truck" look quite well and actually looks better in double cab shape.

The Navara looks ok too, although slightly more toned down maybe.

But I don't know anything about any of them tbh.

I know Land Rover's well. I know they are fairly reliable, lots of silly niggles and maintenance. But overall solid. I also know that coil springs all round and live axles mean they are good off road too.

I'm still waiting for account activation over on the L200 website. But having a quick read it seams worn cranks are common, as are HG failures, chocolate engines has been mentioned, leaky PAS pumps that can't be repaired, issues with the 4wd system.

Quite surprising really. I've also done some browsing on YouTube for vids of them off road. While a few have looked ok, there are simply loads of vids of these things either stuck, getting stuck or simply not doing very well.

I don't want to pre-judge too much. And I'm still interested in learning more. But it has been a bit of an eye opener so far.

Had a new shape L200 Warrior. 65,000 faultless miles only had to replace tyres in that time!

Picked up my new Barbarian a few weeks ago.

ETA: Some of the old shape L200's had overheating problems, true, but it wasn't all of them as some would make out. The Navara's regularly blew engines and I'm sure Defenders and Discos aren't bullet proof. You always hear about the bad stuff.
