Given the mounting hostility by NIMBYs etc to using the green lanes in the Surrey area (and elsewhere for that matter) isn't it about time we showed some initiative by portraying a more positive image? At the top of the Surrey Hills there has been some fly tipping on some of the lanes (fridges etc) so I'm wondering if it would be an idea for a few of use to get together to collect the rubbish and hoik it down to the tip in Dorking?

I'm sure its been done elsewhere and would only take a few willing volunteers, vehicles and a trailer without it getting out of hand - numbers wise.

Any takers? Have I overlooked some basic legal issues?

Some input/debate may be useful.

Cheers all.

The when you arrive at the tip, you won't be allowed to unload as it will be classed as commercial waste, or there will be tyres in it, or asbestos etc etc.

I'd be happy to help out, although to make it worthwhile, I think you'd need to make sure it was planned properly!

If we didn't tell anyone, and then just turned up at a skip site, then as NB says, I expect we'd be charged for dumping commercial waste. This, after all, is why fly tippers dump it there in the first place.

I reckon the council would need to be informed and bought in to the idea in advance, along with the local paper so that Nimby and Co can actually see what is being done.

Maybe round it off by inviting people to sponsor the collection with a donation per item collected given to the Surrey Wildlife Trust or something similar?

OK. Well, apart from some healthy cynicism from a couple of posters (smile ) I'm happy to do a bit of planning and check out the legal requirements via the Council so if anyone is willing to get involved stick your name down below.

Obviously some publicity would be good, but with a few decent images we can arrange that retrospectively and as someone pointed out, we could make a charitable donation to a local/relevant cause and see how it pans out.

Now the bit where you're supposed to keep your head down...

Any volunteers?

I think you may struggle to dispose of some of the items. Hence why they've been dumped in the first place. If you do do it. Make sure it has publicity maybe even local newspaper coverage. If you don't the good deed will go unnoticed and forgotten before you even get back on to Tarmac roads.
