Hi Guys,

Over the past 3-4months I have been refurbing my 1982 Series 3 88".

The insurance starts at the begining of September, other than filling the axles up with oil and bleeding the brakes its good to go mechanically.

But, it needs painting. It use to be a BT Landy so has Yellow paint through various other shades of paint. I have fitted a Defender windscreen, wings and bonnet so its all mis-matched atm.

I would idealy like to paint it Black, it will be hand painted/rolled on. I really dont have the patience to spray it, and if I spend hours geting it perfect then crash it into a tree then I will obviously be pissed off.

I was thinking of painting it Hammered Hamerite Black, I have painted metal before with it and have got it to get a decent shine with a not bad finish. People seem to think it will flake off?

What im after is a paint I can hand paint/ roll on, that will get a decent shine after a bit of polish and wax, will last long and not look to shabby. I was wodering what you guys would reccomend and have experienced with on your off roaders?

Thanks in advance!

Chris.

you can get original colour pain from Craddock/Paddock and can get a very goood finish with a hand roller- there is a skill involved, but take it slow and it can almost look as good as a spray job!

Curious, but how? Presume you've got a Defender bulkhead or something??

Nope, I cut the old windscreen brackets off using a hack saw, then ground them back flush with the bulkhead. The bolts either side of the windscreen inside which secures the screen down is bolted to the bulkhead. I drilled through two the other side of the bulkhead, which turned out to be a pefect fit for the new defender windscreen brackets.

I have bought new defender wiper arms, and made some bushes up at work so they fit to the series wiper shaft. Only difference is that the wipers will both swipe from the midde to the outside, rather than the conventional way most cars and defenders have.

Im only 20, so its a learning curve! smile

Hope that made sense?!?! I have pics if you want?

Sounds interesting. Yeah I'd love to see pics, I'm a bit of a Landy nut too. Currently have a Series III 88 in bits as well:

Try someone like Nu-Agane in Bedford (who are on e-bay) or a local paint supplier and ask them about brushable car paints (coachwork enemel?). They should be able to help you and tell you what paint will go over your existing paint - and how to tell what you've got as an existing. DON'T use Hammerite - it will never look good and you'll never be able to get it off or overpaint it!!!

Nice one! You got anything planned for it? Looks like you have some nice large wheels on it!! Im not sure what the biggest size you could fit on a series is?

I blame my Landy obbession on my girlfriends Dad and Grandad. Her Grandad has a Series 2a 1962 which he has just sold which has been replaced by a Defender with a 6.5 V8 GMC engine. My girlfriends dad has just bought a 1987 Range rover with a 6.2 V8 GMC engine. We stripped that down to a bare chassis like yours is. Should hopefully start building a 100" defender then!

I will get some pics up for you when I get back from work! smile

When I first got it:

Before:

Winscreen cutt off:

Grinding and holes drilled from other side:

Fitted with soft top and both axles rebuilt:

Wiper bush: This was needed to stop the wiper arm fouling up on the windscreep bottom and as there is also no way of securing a defender arm to the series shaft.

I have done a fair bit to it, changed all seals on the axles, new chrome balls, new shoes and wheel cylinders all round, diff pinion seal, rubbed down chassis, rust eater, primed and under sealed, all track rod ends, tightend steering box, breather kit, extended braided hoses, all new copper brake lines, relocated battery, new fuel tank...and loads more proberly. Only started working on it over the past few months seeing as the weather has warmed up!

I got it December 2009 for £550 on ebay with 11months MOT. Chassis has never been welded and there is no rot on the bulkhead. (i dont know how it ever passed an MOT, it didnt even have any advisorys) due to the above I have had to replace.

Always been amazed at the finish you can create with Blackboard paint.

Plasti-Kote BBQ spray paint and finished off with hand rollered Rustins Blackboard paint:

I am also a fan of Paddocks brushable synthetic enamel and have used it on my last and my current LR project. But the final result depends 90% on the prep work.

Current project is a 1966 ex military 109 painted externally with a roller and brush using Containergard which is available in any colour you like. Finish is very 'military' wink
