Wrangler TJ - 2.4l vs 4.0l

Been looking at Wrangler TJ's, would like to have one as a summer fun car. But fuel consumption on the 4.0l engine is a little excessive for my wallet. Doesn't seem to be much in it power wise - 143ps vs. 177ps and 10l/100km vs. 13l/100km combined fuel consumption.

Could anybody who has driven both tell me how the two engines compare? I've only driven the 4.0l model, and that was a very short drive. Thanks!

I don't know to be honest,mine has the 5.9 V8 so both the 2.5 and the 4.0 seem a little gutless.......

I hear that in the real world the 4 pot is not that much more economical than the 4.0. Sounds odd I know,but the 6 pot is a lazy old torquey engine.It is pretty bombproof too.

I've not been in the 2.4, but I think it's the same engine as you'd find in other Dodge/Chrysler products, such as the PT Cruiser and Neon.

I'm not certain, but isn't it a DOHC unit? Either way it's not the HP, but the torque and power curve that differ. The 2.4 makes good power, but you'll need to rev it to get it to work. And I suspect it'll feel a little gutless compared to a 4.0

Not sure on mpg's, I know the older 2.5 struggled to do much better than the 4.0 and while I would expect the 2.4 to be better than the 2.5, I suspect it's not by much. And if you drive it hard, then even though it's capable of better mpg, it might not show itself as much as you'd like.

If you plan to mod with big tyres and the like, then I suspect the 2.4 will struggle more, again due to the less torque in the lower rpms.

Dont bother with a 4 pot TJ get the 4 litre every time
