Evening PH,

Tyres on the Landy (Cruiser that is) need replacing. The car is used more or less just on road, haven't had a chance to take it off-roading yet so it's purely on-road capabilities that are of concern right now.

Current tyres are Dunlop AT20s. Have been really pleased with the tyres, they've lasted around 3 years since we've had the car. Could barely feel the difference when it was snowing too.

I also noticed that these tyres had M+S after the size. I've thought about replacing them with the same but would it make any difference to go for non mud and snow tyres (ie normal ones)?

As mentioned, the only "off roading" it does is in the snow on ungritted up-hill private roads.

Cheers smile

The AT20s are considered to be 80% road tyres with about 20% of all-terrain ability. They seem to be widely scorned in the off-roading community.

They are definitely not mud-terrain or snow tyres - in my own personal experience they are pretty useless in even shallow mud with the treads clogging almost immediately turning them into slicks. They are probably the nearest you are going to get to a road tyre without fitting a 100% road tyre - but then why have a Land Cruiser? smile Cruisers excel off-road but there are far better 4x4 for purely on-road

I got rid of the AT20's on my cruiser and replaced them with Bridgestone D694's.
Another A/T tyre but much better off road. On road driving seems about the same as the A/T 20s (no noticeable increase in road noise or change to fuel economy).
I live in WA so most of my off road driving is on sand or rocky tracks so I couldn't tell you how good or bad they are in the mud or snow.

Take a look at the General AT2 or the BFGoodrich AT KO.

Depends on which L/Cruiser you have as to what works better for you.

We have a 120 L/C and use the General AT2, but have also used the BFG AT KO's on the 120 and my Amazon.

I'd rate the BFGs. I've had them on my LWB Shogun for the last 10k miles or so.

In snow they are unbelievable. The only thing I've tried towing which caused me to lose traction was a fully laden artic, which I couldn't even budge the 4 inches he would've needed to get out onto a gritted road! hehe

In mud they're also pretty damned good, and I've only required rescuing on a couple of occasions - once with water flowing in through the rear door seals at a rate rather too alarming for me to think about finessing out of the mess I was in, and the other repeatedly at one particular off road venue in Somerset which was just slippery beyond belief!

They are not bad on the road either. They're not as smooth as road tyres, especially at very low speeds where you can feel the nobbly bits, and you can't sling it into roundabouts quite as fast before the end swings out, but then this can be a good thing depending on the circumstances! biggrin

As has been said above, if you're not going to actually enjoy the off road potential of something like a Landcruiser, there's far better things you can get for your money just for on road use, so just fit some decent rubber and start having fun!

I'm sorry but whats the point?
As already said why have a vehicle like this for driving on the road?
I said in a post today people like yourself are the reason those of us that need a 4x4 OR heaven forbid use a 4x4 for recrational purposes are penalised by the government and all the tree huggers for owning such vehicles.
It boils my piss when school run mum or mr and mrs suburban detached house have vehicles like this for no reason other than to keep up with the Jones'
Use it, enjoy it or buy a Prius for what its worth.

Because it is big, safe and roomy and the height and visibility are second to none?

All characteristics found in many other vehicles such as MPVs and Transit vans.

If you want one, don't try to justify it, it's your money. smile

Because we can, and until such time as legislation is brought in that says we cant we will. What we do not need is people like you with absolutely no authority telling us what we should or shouldn't do, now be a good boy and keep opinions like that to yourself.

I have 2 Amazons currently and a new V8 Amazon due at the end of September.

Great workhorses, very reliable, safe, comfortable and practical.

I've had 4 in total and am proud to say that I've never taken any of them off road, but the option is there should I feel the need.

If it winds up a few environmentalists or the mud brigade, who cares, it's my money and I'll buy what I want.

As for tyres, my old one has a mickey mouse branded tyre from Bathwick Tyres, new, but very cheap. The newer LC has factory OEM's, Dunlop I believe? I've never had the need to change to a different brand and never had any trouble in any bad weather conditions.

General AT2 are superb.

For something slightly more agressive I found the Kumho KL71 very capable too, amazingly civilised on the road for such an extreme tread pattern.

Not entirely smile

I have a Landcruiser (now on AT2s - a little bit more noisy but far more capable than the Dunlops) and also an MPV. You can't get 8 in the cruiser although it has the belts for them. You can get one small adult diagonally across the back row of seats which have no legroom - I've been there and done it.

The cruiser is about the same height and length as our MPV. However the height of the LC is about clearance and 4x4 transmission underneath whereas in the MPV its about interior space. The length of the MPV is interior space with a transverse engine and transmission tucked into a few feet up front whereas the 4x4 has a vast bonnet on top of a longitudinal engine and 'box. You can't claim you've bought a 4x4 as an MPV, they simply don't do that job well. Oh, and the MPG...

...and incredibly reliable to boot.

Blaming Landcruiser owners for the actions of tree-huggers and a socialist government is a bit daft. Try blaming the tree-huggers and the socialist government perhaps?

ETA - should anyone care, I've got Falken LandAirs on mine and they're good on and off the road as well as being relatively cheap.

As usual people fail to read things properly and jump on the band wagon.
I live in a remote rural location and use a 4x4 to get around, tow a trailer, go shooting etc - I'm not a tree hugger, and I really couldn't care less what you all do or dont drive to be honest.
What I do know is that people who live in built up urban areas do not need something the size of a Landcruiser to drive the kids to school - we have friends in central London and the last thing I would drive to their place in would be the Land cruiser, theres simply not enough space to park on the over crowded streets.
The safety argument doesn't stand as anyone who cares to do a bit of research will see that 4x4's dont/didn't have to meet the same standards as a conventional car - so whilst it has weight and size on its side if you are in a bad accident your fked!
