Where do you off roaders get your tyres?
Discussion
Hi all. You'll be bored of me soon but i'm scoping out and off-road project and just trying to work out a budget. Found insurance can be had for £215 p.a. and a decent disco for about £800-£1000. i want to do some green laning and some pay 'n play days. Nothing too strenuous, to put you in the picture i'll probably not even lift the disco when I get it as i'm more into the "strategy" of off road driving rather than giving it "beans". Want to have fun but without spending forever replacing UJ's etc.
So, how much to budget for a tyre? Are BF Goodrich the only one's to get? They seem very popular. Do other options stack up as well when off roading?

It all depends on what you want, were yo drive and budget. So, how much to budget for a tyre? Are BF Goodrich the only one's to get? They seem very popular. Do other options stack up as well when off roading?
BFG are a good "big name" brand. And will work in most places. But they are not the cheapest. And if it's mostly for off road work there are better and/or cheaper tyres too look at. But terrain type will also make a difference.
But if its pay and play and lanes I'd look at something like a remould, maybe an Amozon/Sahara tread pattern tbh.
BFG AT's are a bit of a mixed bag in my experience.
I do admit they impressed me off road being far better than I thought they would be, but they still won't do as a substitute for a mud terrain.
But its on road where I really have my issue with them. Sure they are quiet and seem to last for ages, but they are a pretty poor performer in the wet, worse than my mud terrains. I've heard people say the rubber goes hard over time, so maybe that's the problem with the ones I run occasionally.

Black Circles get mentioned a lot, but most people seem to find local dealers as cheap. The replies to the What Tyre? threads regularly come up with the aforementioned BFGs and General Grabber AT2s.
I'd suggest sticking with ATs as opposed to MTs. The MTs, rather obviously, won't be as good as the ATs on road and for green laning MTs seem to be widely regarded as inconsiderately destructive.
