Hi folsk. Pretty much got the green light from Mrs Eltax to get an off-roader sorted for a new green laning hobby we are going to start on. Started the search on ebay and this came up:-

Is the prop shaft an easy fix? Sounds like it's had all the welding it needs. One other question, how do you test all the boxes if it won't run? I take it i can't and i'd have to take a punt?

Take two 14mm open ended spanners with you. The prop is held on with four bolts at each end. Drop the prop off, you'll probably need to roll the car to get to some of the bolts. Then put it in difflock & test drive it. I've driven Wales to Sussex several times with a prop removed after breaking it offroad.

Refitting the prop is just as simple, only be aware the holes aren't 90degrees apart so make sure all the bolts go in before doing them up.

Is the disco metric ?
I thought its the same as a RR classic in which case it will be 9/16 not 14mm.
My RRc is currently only 2WD ,front prop removed, but I think the disco box doesn't have a viscous coupling as the RR does, hence the need to put in diff lock as Hooli suggested.

Oh you could be right with 9/16th. I tended to find them interchangeable when I had my disco. It was a proper diff with a lock on my 200Tdi in the transferbox.

Hi not an expert on Discos had a few Rangies, some Discoveries did not have a centre diff not sure what years but needs checking if you want to drive it without the front prop.

Thats D2 around 2000 IIRC. It can be retrofitted as the linkage is still on the t'box, just no solinod connected.

Quite right.

I retro fitted the add on lever kit from Ashcroft Engineering to my 2001 Disco.
