Annoying whining noise

Hi guys,

I picked up a manual SWB Isuzu Trooper yesterday but it seems to have an annoying whine (much like my ex!).

It only happens under acceleration, and in every gear EXCEPT for 4th - which puzzles me slightly!

No whine at all in neutral which I guess eliminates pulleys/belts, and no whine when not accelerating so I guess that eliminates diffs/wheelbearings? I am no expert though!

The whine is very similar to the noise you hear when reversing a car.

Any ideas on what to look at / things to try?

I'd say its a layshaft bearing in the gearbox, that's expensive sorry. It won't happen in 4th as 4th is direct drive so doesn't use the layshaft.
