Why dont TRO's ban ramblers too?
Discussion
Why dont tro's ban ramblers?
if they get caught on a TRO trail they should be prosecuted for trespass or something.
its not really fair that one section of society get punished, whilst the other gets all the treats.
doing this would be fair.. if a lane is lost.. it should be lost to EVERYONE.
otherwise its just DISCRIMINATION.
what happened to equal rights ?
ramblers claim walkers dont damage trails.... have you seen the state the festival fields get into ? neck deep in mud alll due to walkers.

why are they allowed to get away with spouting such bull-tripe ?
at the end of the day, there are hundreds of thousands more miles of footpaths than vehicular rights of way.. why must they insist on walking in the road?
surprised they dont try it on the m5, try to get that TRO'd too

I love my off-roading, whether it be in the Shogun, on my mountain bike, or even at times on foot.
Now, horses aren't great when it comes to leaving the tracks they use unblemished, but absolutely nothing comes close to incompetent 4x4 drivers with no respect for their environment, and unfortunately there's no practical way of banning just the incompetent drivers, so we all suffer.
If you want an example, take the now-closed route over the top of Ranmore Common down Beggar's Lane to the A25 between Dorking and Guildford.
This used to be a cracking byway. It had great big dips which generally had a couple of feet of water in the bottom which were great fun. Basically, there was absolutely no need whatsoever for anyone in a truck to go off the byway.
So what happened? Stupid s insisted on driving off the byway, and by the time it was shut, it had started to look like a WW1 battlefield. That wasn't down to ramblers. It was down to stupid aholes who don't have the common decency to go and pay their £20 to blat around a P&P site.
As for the comparison to a festival site, how many footpaths do you know in the countryside near you which are travelled by tens of thousands of people over and over again in the space of just a few days?
I used to enjoy going out on a Sunday morning as did my kids, all the lanes around Dorking used to be great fun, but over the years they have been destroyed as Kermit has stated already by totally brainless low IQ morons, for some reason Surrey seems to be full of them too, they are not content with the lanes themself but insist on destroying the natural banks, tree lines and hedges, it is now rare to spot genuine Greenlaners, all you seem to see now is the "F*+&WITS tearing up all the land they have no right to be on, I now don't bother as I feel as though I am going to be tarred with the same brush.
We get a small amount of these morons coming to us for tyres and as soon as they say "I want the biggest F**k off grippy tyres for two bob" it says it all, some will no doubt end up being the un-insured hit and run driver that does not give a t**s.
There are still a lot of very responsiable Greelaners out there that I support 100%, but most like me are or have been put off by the minority, I find this very sad.
These lanes will be gone I think in a very short time and there seems no way of stopping that, we used to keep to a MAX four vehicle rule and would always stop, give way and say hello to horses riders, walkers and bikers, these rules don't seem to happen any more, drives me mad.
What will happen when the lanes are all gone ??????????????????????????????, your guess is as good as mine.
There are a few clubs who arrange greenlane trips which is great, but I do think they have tooooooooooooooo many vehicles in a groupe, mind you to many marshaled vehicles is better than just one moron.
Andy.

All land in the uk is owned by someone right?
So why don't the land owners protect their land by building suitable fencing eithe side of the road.
Be thaat hedge rows, concrete, or 100tonne quarry boulders
They did, and that's part of the problem. Many of the Surrey Lanes have built up banks which have marked out their boundaries successfully for centuries. Many of these have been utterly destroyed by selfish morons in 4x4s in just a few years. So why don't the land owners protect their land by building suitable fencing eithe side of the road.

You could maybe at a push argue that the council, landowners or whomever has some sort of duty to mark out the boundaries of a track. You certainly can't argue that those boundaries should be made physically impassable to morons.
Lack of education is the cause, that and a "why should I care?" attitude - the morons buy a 4x4, some big mud tyres and off they go, after six months of screwing up the lanes for more conscientious users they get bored, sell the 4x4 and take up another hobby.
I stopped to chat to some laners heading in the opposite direction to me - there were three of us and four of them - I suggested that they avoided a certain lane nearby because it was very soft and best left until dryer weather the response was "oh, we'll be OK, we've got 35" tyres", not the "thanks for the tip, we'll avoid it".
If I put a voluntary restraint on the lane it will be just that - observed voluntarily by the responsible and used as an invitation by the idiots likely resulting in a permanent Traffic Regulation Order to prevent use by motor vehicles.
Hopefully "tread lightly" will go some way to addressing the education side of things but with little enforcement I'm sceptical of it's success.

PS Any Worcestershire or neighbouring county PH 4x4 owners who fancy learning about laning (it is a bit like becoming a taxi-driver in London - "the knowledge") are welcome to PM me - I am more than willing to pass on the knowledge and educate folks on how to and where...
