I know a few "competitive" offroad guys and many think AT's are better for snow than MT.

The rationale being that the blocks can move more, keeping them warmer and clearer...

I'm not really convinced but I know that MT treads fill with snow pretty quickly! The side lugs on the kl71 seem to help clawing through deep soft snow.

Anyone got an opinion?

No idea. But I think it's not such a clean cut picture. Lug pattern and compound must make a difference too.

On my Disco I'm running some old remoulds called Dirt Devils. Don't think you can get them anymore which is a shame as they look fab and work well in the mud and grass and are even quite aceptable on the motorway at 70mph.

In the snow they have been awesome. They haven't got clogged up and have offered supreme grip in the fresh stuff and drifts and even on the more slippery compacts and iced stuff.

Buy comparison my Uncles 90 had a different set of remoulds with a less
brutal mud terrain lug pattern. I thought these didn't perform anwhere near as well as the Dirt Devils.

My Genneral Grabber ATs have done superbly in the snow over the past few weeks.
Not tried my MTs on the snow, but as they're usually not very good in rainy conditions, I wouldn't think they'de be muck cop on the ice/ snow.

AT are better than MT no doubt about it, General AT2 better than BFGoodrich AT KO, I have driven on all sizes on most vehicles, my Defender 110, Diso and the wifes Landcruiser are all on the AT2.

I've got a set of General Grabber AT2's from Andy on the 110. They've been utterly brilliant throughout this weather.

Give the man a call! smile

Our broncho Diamond Backs are great for snow that is compacted and has not turned to ice, they really smash though the hardened surface and find grip below.
On fresh show though I feel AT's would be better as the contact area is larger. The diamondback MT's want to dig deep for traction and as a result, just end up chewing at fresh snow.

My Vote is for the AT's

As soon as the road tyres are shot on the Jimny, Were planning to replace them with a set of 50:50 AT's and just keep the MT's for playing in the Mudd

Sorry chaps, found some this afternoon.

And Tawse tyres in Inverurie have 4 of the 245x70 in stock if anyone's desperate. You'll need to be though, they want a fking arm and a leg for them!

Update:

Got 5x of the 245x70r16's at £108 fitted inc. VAT. Having driven the wifes disco on the first frosty morning I just had to get the new tyres on ASAP.

We've had temps of -13 since then and about 6 inches of snow. My farm track is very difficult to walk on, it's like polished glass irked

The AT2's I'm glad to say have been superb. Good dry road grip too.

Shame the guys at the local tyre place fitted them white-side out though, look a bit tacky but it's not the end of the world I 'spose...

Great tyres, would certainly recommend them. I got spanked a bit on the price I think.

Mine were about £360 all in, i did have to wait over 2 months for them to arrive though! The lettering on mine is black either side, although i thought they were all white on side, black the other?

Just need some snow now!

Get in! It snowed up here in last night, only 3 inches but enough to put a smile on my face lol! Disco seems unstoppable now, so much better than the worn road biased tyres i was running during the last snowy session.

I got a set of INSA SAHARA M/T's on my Disco 300 and it never put a foot wrong in the snow.

Yeh sure the treads fill with snow, they will on ALL tyres but the flex in the blocks will clear the snow as it moves along if the compound and pressure are correct.

Only in the deep snow will the MT tyres work better than an AT tyre, once it's packed the AT is far better.
