Daihatsu Sportrak

Anybody ran one of these as an off roading toy? if so was it any good? i sold my 90 earlier this year, and im considering something cheap and fun to abuse at various pay/play days. from what i can tell they seem to be available for around the 500 quid mark.
cheers if anyone can furnish me with info!

I've got a daihatsu for running around the farm on, and going to do a few pay and plays hopefully. It's not got MASSIVE ground clearance but it seems to get over more stuff that the standard LR 90 did which is nice. Watch out for front diffs blowing up, the autolocking hubs on the front are often neglected, they rust out the rear chassis rails around the shakles and also do the rear wheel arches.
They're all 1.6 16v toyota engines that are pretty damn good, just the usual things like cambelts to take care of.
I've just stripped all the rust out the back of mine, it's having a "builders foam" repair for the rust holes that are large, for the smaller ones it's just being filled. It needs a little plate on the rear chassis rail but other than that it's bulletproof. I brought it for £420, and it'll cost me less that £100 to get it to pass the next MOT including all the rust removal I'm doing. I can't really argue with that.

sounds good cheers for the info, im really quite keen on getting one as theyre cheap and plentiful and if it goes bang, it doesnt matter at this price range, ive looked at a few on utube, and they seem to be quite capable! They're all 1.6 16v toyota engines that are pretty damn good, just the usual things like cambelts to take care of.

I get 20ish according to the trip computer. Just had to regrind the valves though because the previous owner ran it on the same oil for 3 years, so it's probably just cleaning itself out. I don't get to do long journeys because it's on a 10 mile long island, but it idles when you're doing 60 so it's not very hard stressed. It's also done 350k so it's probably got a few worn out bits. I think you can get the 3 door Cherokee's with a 2.5, might be worth a look?
Still, the gearbox is good and underneath it's built like a tank. Can definitely take a beating!

I wouldn't bother with a 2.5 petrol cherokee, they're not much more economical than the 4.0 and nowhere near as much fun!
wouldn't bother with the TD unless you really need the economy. They are prone to damage cylinder heads when they get on in life.
4.0ltr would do about 22 mpg running short distances and around town. 2.5Td would do about 28 for the same use. On a long run the 4.0ltr would do 28-30mpg, the TD would get 32-34 mpg.
Get a 4.0ltr limited, you'll get full leather, full elctrics, air con, cruise control etc and they are pretty solid reliable beasts.
Reasonably cheap to put a 2-3 inch suspension lift on one too. Plenty getting broken so parts on ebay always available.
