greenlaning in surrey
Discussion
I can't help with lanes in Surrey but can point you in some directions that may help.
BOATs(greenlanes) are byways open to all traffic, you do not need to book to drive them, you just need to perform some checks on them before you drive them.
The first place to check would be the rights of way office at the county council. They'll probably have a page listing TROs (Traffic Restriction Orders). Some even list all of the BOATs in the area (this is a great help if you don't know where to look).
Buy a OS map of your area. Either an Explorer or Landranger map will show all BOATs. Alternatively if you are starting off may i suggest zooming in on streetmap.co.uk near your house/local woodland/farmland to see if there is any near there. Streetmap uses some of the OS imagery in the closer zoom levels. NOTE: Just because it's on the map doesnt mean to say it's still open.
Once you have the map and chosen your route it'd make sense to call the rights of way office to double check that there are no active TROs or upcoming ones which would affect your trip.
This seems like a long way to do it but some lanes are abused and subsequently closed for others enjoyment so it's the easiest way in the long run.
There is also a useful site http://www.trailwise.org.uk/ it's a group updated list of lanes and trails in the country. Non members can gain basic views of lanes. Forums such as diff-lock also have 'laning' threads which may be of some help.
Best of luck.. If you need any more help give me a shout, or if you are out in beds/herts/bucks/northants let me know. Have found some good lanes around this way. (although a large chunk are shut over the winter )

Just had a look on your local councils rights of way site. Looks like you are one of the lucky ones, they have an interactive map which shows the footpath, byway and bridleway network in the county.
Would be a good place to start

A lot of byways aren't kind to paintwork (overgrown bushes etc). Giving the car a decent polish and wax beforehand will help limit the scratches.
You'll have to incorporate the off road area at Brunt at the next Vmax!
The ridgeway and Salisbury Plains are a good place for damage free off roading, and not too far from London -
It's a good idea to go with another vehicle on lanes that you've not been on before.

Yup! Cost a HUGE amount of money last year and this year is looking no better so time to bail and I have lots of cars in stock that I can use whenever I want so it seemed like an expense I did not need with new house etc. Sold it very well though so not all bad. Just bough a 1974 Fiat 500 to whizz around town in! Picking up next week.
You can look up OS maps 1:50,000 online for free, but worth £7 getting a paper one for out and about!

Don't know about Surrey but there are LOADS of greenlanes in Kent, including a large section of Pilgrims Way. Kent's definitive map is also online.
My Rangie lives in Sussex where we've a decent selection too.
Yes, watch out for overgrown lanes though. I always take branch loppers just in case!
An easy East Sussex lane:
