Using winch rope in a Tirfor hand winch?
Discussion
Do you mean synthetic winch rope or metal cable?
former won't work safely- you can probably get it to work when unloaded, but it will slip under load- the tirfor (if you mean a proper tirfor that "walks" a unit up a line- this http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Recovery_Ti... )
A tirfor will work with cable but ONLY if its the right widt of cable, which iirc is dependant on the size of the tirfor!
also its very very very hard to thread line through a tirfor so a line with a rounded nose is evry veyr helpful

hvae you tried oiling your winch cable recently?
iirc you need specific winch cable oil, but it makes the cable much more malleable- more expensive cable is much easier to handle too.
doesn't solve the weight issue but will at least stop it beig totally unmanageable and ending up in a big knotted pile on the floor!

Condition wise my kits in good order, its simply the weight side of things. I use my winch for arboricultural work which tends to have me climbing up and down river banks, wading through rivers and up and down ropes so the lighter my kit the easier I can get get about. I've got a little lug-all winch I use which is lightweight but unfortunately doesn't always have the pulling power.
