I have been offered a Freelander for free and was wondering if it was worth taking. I know the obvious answer is yes but hear me out first.

I don't need another car. I have a go-faster toy, a daily hack and I am looking to get another project to fill my winter. The only real use would be to tow the toy to tracks etc. To me this is not really justification for having another car to keep on the road.

So I thinking of having some off-road fun to justify the vehicle. I know nothing about off-roading and even less about Freelanders so I have a few questions.

If I turn up in a standard Freelander will I be ridiculed and then have to be dragged out of a ditch by a proper Landy?

Do freelanders 'do' off-road or are they just a blinged up, watered down attempt at a 4x4?

I am not too fussed about how long the car will last off-road as its free but if its simply not up to the job in terms of off-roading then I really wont bother.

Thanks guys,

Crash

Take it and do some green laning in it, you might be a bit out of your depth at some of the more serious pay and play days but I am firmly of the opinion that you have a lot more fun this way, when you have an all conquering machine it takes some serious obstacles to have the same amount of fun. Plus, you'll probably get bitten by the bug and end up upgrading it anyway. They are quite capable in the rough stuff, you'll just struggle with clearance, but if its cost you nothing you won't mind bashing it about will you?

i'll be glad to take it!

1st dibs if you choose not to have it for yourself!

it can do offroad, but it has no low range box, a viscus center diff. ( 1st in the freelander is equivalent to 3rd in lowrange in other offroaders )

unless you keep the tyres spinning, it wont really be very effective in the sticky stuff and you will get stuck.

but if its a 1.8, then you can fit the mgzr160 vvc head to give it a power boost.

ground clearance can be a problem, but a 2" lift will help. and you cant just fit 35" mud pluggers to it.

i dont think it has any kind of difflock either like the xtrail.

again. take it, and try it out... or as i mentioned above. i can come collect and relieve everyone of the problem smile

ETA :

reluctant to show you this, as i'd really like a free car lol

Sorry for the belated reply, have been abit busy. Am going away for the summer but when I return I think I will be collecting the car.

I have found a 2" lift kit and that doesn't look too difficult to make so will get one of those.

And as for your help and that thread - brilliant. Although freelanders really don't look as hard as a proper landy.

Found out its one of those where the back comes off

cool biggrin

make sure you have LOTS of fun biggrin

if its the 1.8.. when the head gasket eventually goes, install an mgzr160 head or the MGTF160 head for the vvc... that will up your power to 160bhp

I know you mean the removable hard top, but I couldn't help but laugh and think about Freelanders' preference for falling apart. (But for a freebie, it's great!)

I can just hear the dealer... "They all do that, sir..." *giggle*

Picked this up today.

Came accross a chap (on a landy forum) who is local to me and has a quarry that hes willing to let people use.

Need to play musical garages over the weekend so wont be able to enjoy myself in the new car.

Whats a good freelander forum (besides the one on here)

Landyzone and landrovernet.com are both good, as long as you make it clear the car was free you shouldn't be subject to too much mickey taking!

Have been off roading with several Freelanders and they seem to be fairly capable once lifted an inch or two and fitted with mud tyres.
