Hi-dee-hi,

A friend of mine has got heavily into off-roading at the minute. He bought a Range Rover classic with 3 inch lift, rock sliders and stupidly huge tyres.
We've been having loads of fun at some of the 4x4 play days but he's starting to hanker after something different.
He's looking for something with a bit more fuel economy than the Ranger (15mpg) and would prefer a diesel so he can play in the water more.

So:

-Diesel
-4 wheel drive
-Cheap (sub £1000)
-Would prefer something already suited towards off-roading (i.e. lift kit, tyres, snorkel etc)

Any ideas from the collective motoring genius, that is Pistonheads?

Most 4x4's, even diesels, will have crap economy by the time you've lifted the suspension and fitted agressive mud tyres...

Sorry laugh

I agree with the chap above, a disco tdi is probably the best bet. Will be a bit of a snotter for that money though.

True, but the Ranger is a serious drinker, even for a injected 3.5 V8.

Mate of mine bought himself a RR classic fitted with a 7 litre USA GM diesel engine.

What a beast that is!

TBH I doubt a disco with 200tdi and offroad mods will better 20mpg...

Now, ignoring the economy, obviously diesels are better for wading and the low-down torque and engine braking is good.

A lot of RTV guys use v8 autos and just put a bit of effort into waterproofing the dizzy. This might be your mates best bet if he's not all that bothered about economy (which he's unlikely to improve much).

He was talking about a Grand Vitara (sp?) We see quite a few at the play days and they can hold their own. Anyone have any experience with these?

I've seen these in 6.2 and 6.5 guises, never a 7.0 litre before though! yikes

The 6.2 is turbocharged IIRC and makes about 160bhp and about 400lb/ft I think. It only revs to about 3500! Feckin heavy lump too I would imagine laugh

Is he planning on using it on road much or is it going to be an offroad-bh?

Lots of guys use Suzuki SJ's and even Jimnys these days, suitably modified. Not nice for everyday use though.

The problem is that the things that make a truck good offroad tend to make it balls on the tarmac!

I'd seriously suggest keeping one vehicle for offroad use and buy a cheap commuter...

If your mate gets into RTVs he'll soon find he wants to spend more and more on mods for the rangey!

Sub 1k doesn't leave many choices tbh. Swapping in a tdi engine to the RR is probably the cheapest bet or buying a tdi Disco and swapping parts on from the RR. Other 4x4's are capable but a grand is not really enough to buy and mod. A diesel Cherokee would be my suggestion if you want something different.

Funny one 300, I thought of that but the 2.5 vm engine has a reputation as being a bit st. I had one for a little while and didn't think much of it. The 4.0 on the other hand is a superb motor but, again, with offroad mods the economy is awful.

I had a big box-section rack on mine (with a 3" lift, 31" MT's and a fair bit of extra metalwork) and low teens was the norm.

Yes, could be him rounding - might be the 6.5 I think.

It's quite loud but not in the rattly diesel way that you'd expect.

Must be quite thirsty too I would have thought??

I quite like the VM's. But the 4 litre is nice, but yay fuel wise nota lot better than an RV8. I've got a 200tdi Disco on 34's and modded engine it does 20 - 24mpg as a rule. Think you'll struggle to do much better for £1k

How about searching for an SJ with a diesel engine transplanted, believe it is quite common to pop in XUD diesels out of 205's and stuff, even 1.8 diesels out of Escort vans. The SJ's are unstoppable and then you get the bonus of improved economy and the ability to run it on veg oil.

for £2500 you could run a Jimny ... just as unstopable..ours is 1.3 petrol and we have no issues with water up to 6 ft deep
