Off roading in the north west??

Does anyone know anywhere that is free (legal) or relatively inexpensive for me to enjoy my discovery within an hour or so drive of liverpool. I took it to a place near elsmere port yesterday (sunday) and I had a great time but as we were leaving there were a few unmarked plod taking reg numbers down. Not sure that im ready for green laning just yet but thats the long term plan.
