I’ve just discovered something today about insuring through Footman James that you might like to know.

I was trying to insure my Defender 90 through Footman James and happened to mention off-roading. The girl on the phone immediately refused to cover me and said that they would not cover off-roading apart from green laning, and would not offer me cover at all if they knew I might even go off-roading!!!. I know a few fellow club members who are insured through FJ and do play days and probably don't know that they are not insured even for third party claims – unless the site covers them or they are somehow insured through a members' club. This is all despite their ‘appealing’ adverts in all the Land Rover magazines!

This is obviously worth considereing when renewing insurance.

It's not THAT surprising really is it?It's like getting road insurance for your car and then expecting cover for when you do a track day...

I use Flux for my Oonimog and S2k,happy so far.

Possibly - but Land Rovers were designed for off-roading - so it's like buying a racing car and not being insured for track days - and also, FJ advertise in all the off-roading mags as 'specialist' car insurers!

"so it's like buying a racing car and not being insured for track days "

Not quite sure I follow that logic.

Land Rovers (especially Defenders) were specifically designed for off-roading, so it's fair to assume that anyone buying one would have a fair likelihood of using it off road - the same way a race car is bough to do track days!!!

But you wouldn't drive a race car on the road, would you?Or perhaps you are suggesting that owners of sports cars/racy types of cars would be shocked to find that an insurer would not cover them for track days....

I think you're being somewhat obtuse there. Nobody in their right mind would buy a Defender if they didn't plan to take it off road, and even if someone did, they surely wouldn't be reading the off road mags where they're advertising?

If you don't like the race car analogy, how about someone buying a lorry, only to be told they're not insured if they actually carry any cargo in it? You can still drive it on the road, but you're not insured to use it for the purpose it was designed for, just as the Defender was designed to be used off road.

I think you must be getting confused here surely?

Perhaps they said: 'You won't be insured when you use it off road'

As opposed to:

'We won't insure you if you're going to use it off road'

They sound the same but have two different meanings. I.E, you can off road if you want, but any damage you occur as a result of off roading will have to be paid for out of your own pocket. I can't see how they could refuse to insure you if the land rover will be driven off road at all, as A) it's none of their business what you do with the car off the public road, and B) that could mean driveways, private properties and car parks, which is just ridiculous.

Yes, I would, as mine are also road legal and insured on TD's.

As for Footman James - I won't bother calling them as they sound like a few others that I contacted recently - what a waste of time and effort! One chap told me that if I went green laning is was considered to be rallying! FFS! LOL. Yep, move aside Mr Loeb, Def 110 coming through!

As was my Caterham, however it certainly wasn't the norm for track day cover to be included...
