2.25 diesel into a petrol series 3
Discussion
anyone done this??? im very tempted by this conversion for a couple of reasons, increased fuel economy (sort of!) low box crawling down hill potential. obviously ill be sacrificing a little bit of speed if i do this. but my mates got a series 3 diesel, and it just seems to suit its diesel engine. feels nicer to drive too! and another thing they seem to be cheap enough to buy and in theory should just drop right in. but finding one close enough to me is a night-mare!!!
as far as i know there would be some fairly complex exhaust work to do, also move an engine mount i think and i dont think it would bolt to a series gearbox? so therefore id be stuck with a disco one i think??? please do tell if this is easier than i perceive because i can lay my hands on a 200 tdi fairly easily!!!

Mate, the 2.25d is a pig - you really are not going to improve your economy by much at all and it'll get a whole lot slower!
200tdi is a much better bet - you'll get vastly improved performance and economy!
i appreicate the 2.25 isnt that great. Im fairly handy with the spanners but not sure id be able to attempt a 200tdi conversion. i have welding equipment and other toold neccesary for fabrication if need be, but it just all seems a little complex!200tdi is a much better bet - you'll get vastly improved performance and economy!
Engine mounts are a straight swap... You can get an exhaust from Steve Parker if my memory is correct... Or make it yourself.
Battery has to be resited under the passenger seat, bit of wiring. Google is your friend, plenty of forums with the detail...
Edited to add - Gearbox bolts straight on with little effort, again check LR forums..
Why replace clockwork with clockwork...

Your runnig costs will be higher with the 2 1/4 diesel as the economy improvement is only marginal but you'll be paying 10p more per litre!
Either stick with your 2 1/4 petrol and give it some TLC - I've always fancied a Series Landy turner engineering type rebore, some head re-profiling and an SU carb.... or as others have said the 200Tdi is a simple swap.

Take a look at www.glencoyne.co.uk he has a useful overview of installing a 200Di (200TDi without the T)this should instill some confidence around the work required.. Personally I would fit the 200TDi without the Intercooler as this need some modding to fit within the Series front panel.

didnt realise you didnt need to fit the intercooler, that would nake things much easier i reckon. Gassing Station | Off Road | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
