SALISBURY PLAIN BY WAYS WARNING/ SIEZED VEHICLES

Well not been off roading for long, and the local area is all the same to me. However i DID go in the wrong areas in my nievity, and am now paying the price.
I HAVE BEEN CAUTIONED BY THE POLICE FOR GOING IN 'OUT OF BOUNDS' AREAS. Its been ages since i've done this but the evidence was put in here by me. DOH!!
Be warned, if you are caught in the area they will SIEZE YOUR VEHICLE. I may be prosecuted, not sure yet, but if you off road on salisbury plain stick to rights of way to be safe. I AM!! NOW.
I've bought my maps etc, so be safe, be legal and all is well.
THE RANGE WARDENS/POLICE WILL CREAM YOU. Three brand new landys were siezed sunday for going into flagged areas.
Take heed from the mistakes of myself and others. it will bite you on the ass otherwise.

Anyone on private land illegally, or damaging legal rights of way deserves trouble.
I actually was put under the impression when i started going out by mod police, that i could go anywhere there was already a track. pleased with this info out i went.

Good advice, but don't believe rights of way marked on OS maps as they are often years out of date. Take your OS maps to county hall and ask to see the definitive ROW map and mark those that are legal on your OS maps. I know several people who got into deep trouble believing OS maps. 
And on Salisbury Plain it is not just the damage to the land. Flags are there for a reason....LIVE FIRING! Just because you cannot see someone with a rifle does not mean you are safe, the impact area can extend for several kilometers beyond the rifle range (considerably more for indirect fire).

Check that the land wardens are correct I used to off road on a drz400 with a mate who knows the area very well, we were stopped a couple of times for being off the byway, which we weren't, if you know where to go there is some great driving/riding.
Don't try to make a run for it, they will put the helicoptor up and you've got to be really quick to escape it!

Always makes me really nervous on the plains in case I accidentally stray in to the wrong area. Last time I went up there it was a weekday and me and my little bro were ponsing around in his standard Vitara. It was really misty and we thought we were miles from anyone else when out of nowhere 3 massive tanks just rolled by 10ft away, with the little soldier men peering out of the top at us, was very surreal. At one point little bro was saying "Lets go in those woods, they look like fun." I crept up to the edge to have a nose, and was just considering going in for a trundle around when we noticed about 6 massive army trucks parked up in the foliage, and lots of very well camouflaged squaddies looking at us while holding their big scary guns. We just backed out slowly.....
On another note, has anyone seen the sort of tank graveyard that is up there somewhere? I remember last summer coming across the brow of a hill, and in the foreground far down below were stacks of tanks and stuff that looked abandoned. The old abandoned town/village where they do their urban combat training is really cool too, would make a great paintball arena!
Are you allowed up on the plains at night or is that a big no no? Would be creepy, but I imagine quite fun.

That's urban legend my friend.If you're really unlucky you might have a run in with the Police/AA MD Explorer if it is in the area,but I suspect you won't be priveliged enough to have it launched for your benefit.I've even heard some hilarious stories of "perps" being chased by an Apache.......Don't try to make a run for it, they will put the helicoptor up and you've got to be really quick to escape it!

That's the impact area for artillery fire. The tank hulks are used as points of reference (not targets) for guiding in indirect fire. Probably one of the most dangerous places on the plain as it's full of 'blinds' (rounds which didn't go off). They do try and clear it now and again, but even with extensive experience of the area it's somewhere I really wouldn't go.Ranger 6 said:

normalbloke, it's no urban legend i know people who have been pulled by the chopper!! Things got very tight after a little girl got knocked over and killed by a guy on an untaxed/uninsured crosser.
It's not an army helicopter (although a couple of mates have been suprised by an apache when out on enduros at night), the police heli is in the area very regularly.

years ago when i first saw it i started to do doughnuts on the tank crossing trying to get a reaction, they ignored me and continued with whatever they were doing, but yes, it is here on a VERY REGULAR basis and is only MINUTES away from its base.

That'll be the Royal Artillary firing range, they do hit the tanks now and again, but as said above, best to stay out of that area. I know where it is, not saying though, always observe the red flags, its not your vehicle i'm worried about, its the dead bodies someone has to clear up.
You should warn people - it's north west of the School of Artillery at Larkhill. There's also a missile range off the Netheravon road, but the one's we used didn't have HE warheads so that's less of a danger ( if you can call smaller high explosives less dangerous )I should've said - they're not supposed to hit the hulks. I did once on my course and got a bit of a talking to...
