hi folks

need some advice

ive just been made redundant and my forms car is going back this weekend.decided to buy something with a bit of load capacity, so i can do some free lance building work whilst looking for another job.

stuck between the ranger, L200 and the navara

anyway found a cracking nissan , 2001, 86k, nissan service history to 70k, then local garrage thereafter, blue over silver with every cromey bit on it.
£ 4000

l fell in love and put 500 quid deposit on it, to pick it up on monday,

then i find out about the crank problem on them, does anyone know if its just a few issolated engines that go bang, or is it quite likely to let go ?

I cant afford to spend my money on it and then it explodes, but I cant afford to just right off the 500 quid deposit either or ill be down to 3.5k for what ever I buy instead.

Can any one help

Wouldn`t take the chance on a Navara new or old, no way of telling if or when.
A Ranger or an older Hilux would be within your £4k

Re Navara I had one from new, at 3 years old and 35,000 miles the timing chain tensioner broke, dropped down inside the timing case and jammed the thing solid. This happened on startup and so damage was minimised to a few bent valves. There is a 3 year warranty on these but I was 10 days out, Nissan ould only agree to assist with the bill. I was fortunate that I did not need the truck on the road so argued and finally got them to accept a grand as my contribution. The repaired truck ( it took three months!)it lasted 50 miles before one of the camshaft buckets jammed in the head jamming a valve open, this time it broke both camshafts and bent all the valves. I was back at the dealers and the technician admitted there were lots of problems with the tensioner bracket failing, also the then new and now current model had axle, steering, heater and cooling problems he said. My advice steer clear buy a Mitsubishi, Isuzu or Toyota.

problem is if every one know what there like i might get stuck with it or have to drop the money a lot to shift it, and it 50 miles home from the seller, not sure if it will make it

I thought it was only the D22 engines that played up, the D40 are ok, well so i thought.

The early D22s are pretty good as long as the service intervals have been adhered to (every 6000 miles, which is a PITA)
04/05 D22s are a bit ropey,I should know i've had both and yes my 05 blew it's bearing shells
My 02 plate was bullet proof, ran it for 77000 miles with no problems whatsoever

I'd say it'll all depend on the service history,i've seen plenty of 120000+ early plates and the owners claim they've never had a problem, was talking to someone yesterday about her 03 plate that had 110000 on the clock and she uses it regulary for towing a horsebox
Sounded like a sack of spanners falling down a steel staircase though but IIRC my 02 sounded the same, especially when cold

Buy it and have the shells and conrod bolts changed to upgraded gear. Shells are available and if I remember correctly American Race Bolts for SR20 (200sx) are well up to the job. Did mine ages ago as a precaution with no problems. Can't understand the mentality of waiting for something to let go which can quite easily be fixed to a higher standard than original.

how much do you think it would be to have that done

will it stop the can chain falling of and jamming every thing up or is there another conversion for that

Would think there are plenty of good indys about that are crying out for work and would probably do the bottom end rebuild for about £500. You obviously have done some homework and scared yourself to death, so a bit more investigation should give you the part numbers you will need (bottom end shells and rod bolts).

Why so hung up on cam chain failure? Chains and belts fail everyday on all makes of car get it changed it's afterall a service part and won't last forever.

Have you considered a Alfa?

sorry didn't mean cam chain, meant cam chain tensioner, as in one of the posts above

this is why ! was worried http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2008/10/pickup...

it might be nonsense, but without proper info its a big gamble to take with a 4 grand motor when recond engines cost 2k a pop, why would any one buy a vehicle on which you have to have the motor rebuilt to get it serviceable to the same level as other makes which cost the same money

my ex had an alpha sud I bought her to keep her happy, one of the reasons she gave for leaving me was id got her sht car which kept breaking down,

Any way let it go, on the advice above, and bought a disco, seems ok so far

By the same token I bought my Range Rover in full knowledge of the problems that occur with older P38 4.6 V8 models, it was still epic to own and drive, and yes cost me a fortune in longterm service costs and maintenance.
The porus bore problem never came to light everything else broke first.

Would I have another one?
Yes I would and will.
