Ive got a 2.0 MY2000 Subaru Legacy; as standard, how deep can it wade and what work would have to be done to let it wade deeper?

i dont think a snorkle will look good on a legacy....

but that is what you will need

ignoring looks, is that all it would need? would the electronics not all need waterproofing? what about 'breathers'?

How deep can it go as standard? upto air intake?

Sustained, yes only up the air intake. If its the same as my MY02 Legacy GTB then the intake is across the top of the radiator right at the front, in a perfect place to suck water in as you splash into something. There are a few extra cavities/airbox etc which will catch the water before it gets to the engine so you should be able to get through deeper stuff if its only a short splash.

The older Legacies sucked air from inside the guards so should be better in water - I've been through rivers with water over the bonnet in Subarus but only narrow ones, in and straight out the other side.

The intake is where you suggest yes. A hood scoop seems the obvious place to relocate the intake for more altitude...

hood scoop seems like a great idea... until you get your bow wave wrong and the water swamps over the bonnet...

if you know thats not going to be a problem... then give it a shot smile

I gave it a shot in my 1999 Legacy. Place just outside Droitwich called Ombersley was flooded. The road was "guarded" by the local fire dept who advised me to go back but I was out of time and needed to chance it (in fact, only a wrecked/flooded car would have been a sufficient excuse for my lateness at the time). The water came up to the bottom of the headlights - I could see the light from them refracted as they became submerged from time to time. It got through though. The deep part of the flood was about 75 metres long - enough to put a decent amount of fear in me.

I was looking at my new Leggy. I think the air intake is in the grill, which means it's quite exposed. I don't recall where my previous Leggy's intake was but I might have been extremely lucky not to have shagged it good 'n' proper that night.

My first car was an old Subaru Leone which I managed to drown once - water level was about the bottom of the windows, I made it maybe 10-15m with about the same to go before it started to splutter and I turned it off to avoid hydraulic seizure.

Changed all oils/filters etc, took the seats and carpet out for a week to dry, blew about a bucket of water out of the exhaust when it first cranked over but still went as well as it ever did.

The joys of simple cars biggrin
