My friend has taken his D3 around offroad courses that "extreme" Defenders ave gotten stuck in. Although I suspect a D3 would be literally unstoppable on some AT tyres, it isn't exactly struggling on the road tyres.

Amazing machine but I suspect the combination of it's abilities as standard and people's general reluctance to use them offroad might limit the number of photos available.

Tried the D3 owners website?

Great pics. Nice to see them being used properly.

I wrote previously what a "limo" experience it was being in the D3 at Billing this year, on the offroad course. My brother in his "extreme" Defender was an absolute hero driving through the water at the side fo the lake. He had to change gear with his RIGHT and because his left hand was holding his 1yo son's head (to stop it bobbing around). They both loved it, but we sailed through in the D3 - fully automatic, suspension set to high, leather inside with aircon, "sealed" doors (my brother's feet got wet) and a DVD player in the roof for our two kids in the back.

It's a truly amazing car. I only have room for 2 cars and one needs to be a Caterham, so despite the fact that I love my Scooby, I think it'll get replaced with a D3 next time.

I'm in two minds about the ARB bumper in those pics. Whilst I recognise it as a superior item, and love them on classic Rangeys and Defenders, and even Series 1 & 2 Discos, something gets lost to the D3 when one is attached in place of its original.

I'd probably have to add one at some stage. Caterhams and Land Rovers are all about "upgrades", no? wink

yes, im seriously considering one of these or a D2 as my next car. ( currently drive everywhere like my hair is on fire, and if i want to keep my licence.. this has to stop! )

i know i wont be able to resist doing modifications. so just wanted to see what it might look like with a few choice mods smile

I had a new Disco 2 and did 400,000kms in it,had it chipped, bigger intercooler, bigger pump plus some work to the gearbox carried out by a company at Coventry, until it went bang at 380,000kms.
Good offroad & for towing.

Then bought another RR new, within the first 25k had loads of gearbox problems so sold it, also not a patch on the old RR's and also it always felt none too clever off road when compared to the Disco.

Now looking to buy another 4x4 but cannot make up my mind what.

Any problems with the new Disco ? as I always do a high mileage in a fairly short period of time.

Those nose in sand pictures are amazing, I'd have thought it'd go tits up.

As for the G4 truck, other than maybe a different tread pattern, the tyres don't get any more aggressive than that.

Granted you have one of the same but i like my picture so i'm going to share it. smile

The G4 spec disco's (orange one above) are standard discovery 3s with standard accessories apart from the mtr tyres. Built for the G4 competition to showcase the impresive capabilities of the car.

Log onto disco3.co.uk and look at the australian people's cars as they do the 1000k's road trips in very upgraded cars.

ARB do the front bumpers and a rear bumper with swing away arm to mount the spare wheel on it, instead of the normal position of under the car.

Reliability is very good, the Electronic parking brake can stick on but most of the early cars (04,54,05 regs) have the other suspension etc problems solved by software upgrades.

I want one of the orange g4 models but they only made 37 examples in rhd and lhd so are as rare as hens teeth frown One day though, i might even be able to run the V8 engine for more than one day a month as well hehe

You don't really get "lift kits" for the independently-sprung D3, as the vast majority are on air suspension. The very basic models have coils, and there are a couple of companies who make lift-kits for these, though it only really takes you up to the standard offroad-mode height of the air suspension models.

The smallest diameter wheels fitted to the D3 are 17" - and most "huge mud-plugging" tyres are for 16" rims.

Hence, why you don't really see any with lift-kits and huge wheels.

That's not to say that they are not very capable offroad, as the disco3.co.uk galleries when evidence.

so is Independent suspension better than x2 solid axles?

for a desert racer yes, for a low speed rock krawler no.

Whilst we don't do much in the way of off-roading we do have a number of very high mileage D3s at work (18 months old, 150,000 miles approx.) For those interested in reliability, they have been very good generally. Common faults are the electronic handbrake going faulty and locking on, due to dirt in the mechanism. You can tell when this is going t happen because the handbrake will make a nasty graunching noise for a while beforehand. This can be avoided by asking them to clean it out at service, so it never occurs. The air suspension can throw a wobbly if they are jacked up wrong too, tyre fitters have to know what they are doing.

Incidentally, the air sprung models have a nice little feature. If you get beached off road with the suspension already raised, you have an emergency option to raise it again to the limit of it's travel which might be enough to unstick you. Here's a pic of the car it it's emergency extended position....
