Greenlanes in Wales
Discussion
Hooli, if you KNEW your stuff, if you know your green lanes then you would be aware that the Strata Florida is one of the best green lanes around wales, in fact the country. quote total off road magazine, "Whats the most famous green lane in Britain? Most people would probably still say the ridgeway - but if you know your rights of way, Strata Florida will be up there with the best of them.
It starts in Llanddewi Brefi, (watch out for the only gay in the village LOL) finishes in Pontrhydfendigaid. distance 69 miles, time 8 hours, terrain mountain passes hilly farmland, forest tracks Hazards, deep water rocky outcrops, other users occasional holes and axle twisters.
no i didn't start my engine, as i havn't been this year, but going hopefully with north somerset landrover club.
so hope that answers your pathetic attempt at wit. by the way, sarcasim is the LOWEST FORM OF WIT!!!
HAVE A GO, LET US KNOW YOUR TIME. FANCY A BET, I RECKON YOU COULD DO IT IN HALF AN HOUR, ALL 69 MILES.

don't want to question someone who may know a bit more than me on this...
but Llanddewi Brefi is a fair few miles west of where I thought the usually driven route for the strata florida starts at the south(ie, mid Tywi Forest) (circled here)
http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=strata+florida&am...
There are normal roads between Llanddewi Brefi and here, are you including them?
We did the "usual" route in about 4 hours and that was taking it very easy, stopping quite regularly.
If there's a bit I missed, I'd be interested to see where it is.

google strata florida, a good one in wales. about an 8 hour total drive.
Did do that lane in the end was a bloody nightmare! There were more vehicles along that route than the M4 that day! There was also a motorbike trial happening along it as well, so every few hundred yards we ended up pulling over so they could roar past!Edited by SmokinV8 on Thursday 29th January 13:45

ive done it loads of times with locals & according to them its about 2hours long. is the other bit commonly known as part of it? as far as im aware i've NEVER seen any of it except the bit that zigzags up the river known by that name.It starts in Llanddewi Brefi, (watch out for the only gay in the village LOL) finishes in Pontrhydfendigaid. distance 69 miles, time 8 hours, terrain mountain passes hilly farmland, forest tracks Hazards, deep water rocky outcrops, other users occasional holes and axle twisters.

its been a few years since i was up there but i think 2 hours was about right for the bit i know by that name.
Right, the info I posted came from total off road magazine, issue august 2008. I only quoted there article. As my pc is playing up today, posting this via my iPod touch. However I will try to scan and post all ten pages of the article under a new topic today or tomorrow. Will call it strata Florida maps. Apologies if my info is incorrect but I thought total off road would have had the correct route.

signia smokingv8 and hooli, if you wish, pm me your address, can you do that here? not used this site much, usualy a fan of mercedes190, they often post links to this site which is where i found you from. gonna get a bit more regular in this section anyway i think.
my unsafe email address i.e. one that i go public with, its a secondary account for such purposes, is
JASON.HOODEDCOBRA@GMAIL.COM it came from a psp game with online team play, it was the name of our clan, the hoodedcobras so we all had a gnail account to arrange matches etc. i kept mine for future use.
back to topic pm or preferably email me and i will post you colour copies of the article for your parousal. would be interested to hear what length distance and time differences to what you had done. i have never been, going later this year hopefully with north somerset land rover club, but hey, who's up for a summer gtg and doing ourselves? get back to me and let me know your thoughts. will try to get the route plans on here later or tomoz as i said, but if i can't and you want them email me your addresses and i'll post at my cost.

I have done strata florida many times also camped by the water fall, even though it is the longest lane by far in Wales the last few miles are well surfaced and can be driven at good speed,we nearly allways start at the church end unless camping,4 hours is all takes tops,Total Enthusiast,International Monthly and the Sun have never been off road they do shows and want your cash. When going off road Wales,Dorset, france or even play and pay talk to the people who have done it,I did and enjoy every bit of it.
Lets get some facts about Strata Florida.
Its approx 7 miles in length and the northern end starts near Strata Florida abbey near Pont Rhyd efendegaid (sp)
Its southern end is on the Abergwesyn mountain road between Abergwesyn and Tregaron. Tregaron is approx 5 miles from Llanddewi Brefi where I have lived.
Llanddewi Brefi was the start point for a TOR roadbook published in August 2008 which included in its 69 miles many more lanes and road miles than just Strata Florida, please read the roadbook again.
It is a great lane that is being spoied by mindless idiots repeatedly driving 'off road', just look on you tube or similar for proof of this.
Its a sensitive lane under threat of closure so if you're gonna drive it then please do so responsibly.

Yep, that's the Srata Florida I know. Last time we did it we camped next to the river by the two watersplashes on the Abergwesyn road out of Beulah. From one end to the other took about 35 minutes in two LR 90's. Nice road but not very challenging unless it's rained very heavily. When we camped the night before the farmer told us he regularly used to tow a trailer to market along it behind his early RR! As i posted previously in this thread, i have only quoted the information given to me by total off road magazine. I have never been to wales in anything other than a two wheel drive car, so personally can't quote time or distance. Also my scanner won't work so i can't scan the article into my computer. But the info i stated was what was printed in the total off road mag.
apologies if its wrong, but blame them not me for incorrect information.

I think the route you are refering to consists of a couple of miles of the county road that ends at Strata Florida and includes huge chunks of a very long lane and Roman Road called Sarn Helen which goes about 160 miles on and off from Aberconwy to Carmarthen. I think the route you are talking about uses the part of Sarn Helen that goes from just by Neath up to not far short of the south end of the SF county road. Nice drive, but don't go alone! apologies if its wrong, but blame them not me for incorrect information.
The route you quoted accurately but the way you quoted it was inaccurate.
Strata Florida makes up only a small part of the overall route in TOR and the info they gave for the route they printed was very accurate. I know because I drove it in August 2008, heres the link to the photos of the day, http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/mrnejones/TORRoadboo...
The last 17 pics are on Strata the others were part of the same roadbook including Soar-y-mynydd and Crychan Forest old coach road.
On this TOR roadbook there are many more tarmac roadmiles than track or greenlane ones but it still makes for a very enjoyable day out in very rural Wales.
Heres a link to many more Greenlaning pics http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/mrnejones
