Maverick, Terrano front hubs??

Ive heard that the Maverick & Terrano II 4x4's have been known to get problems with their front hubs not engaging.
Is there anyway by looking at them without jacking the vehicle up that these can be checked.
I quite fancy buying a Terrano but dont wanna buy a wrongan.
Any help or advice will be gratefully recieved.
