Modern LR Defender 90 - easy to live with?
Discussion
Hi all,
Have a bit of a car shuffle at the moment and wanted to consider something for the "utility" side of life.. Want to be able to go green laning, pay and play sites but also something that will take me, the Mrs the dog and all our gear away for the weekend.
I have always liked and quite fancied a LR Defender 90.. But my only hesitation is what would it be like using it for a long journey? the odd trip to customers etc
Are the modern 2002 onwards vehicles much better than those of old?
Are they easy to modify for any improved performance? diesel tuning etc? soundproofing?
What is the realistic mpg from a diesel 90? or should i consider a cheaper to buy V8 and go the lpg route?
As you can see, lots of questions so any advice greatly welcomed
Cheers
Nick

Yes they are great fun!
Anything with a TD5 in from say 1999 will be better than the earlier ones.... on the road especially.
2002 had a minor face lift (if you could call it that) with a vertical panel for the radio, and a steel rear door. (and a few other minor things)
2005 or so onwards got steel front doors too.
2007 onwards has the puma ford engine and 6 speed box with the new dash, bonnet hump etc etc...
I would personally not buy a new ford engined one as the new interior could be wrecked very quickly if you get it stuck in a river..... but then most people probably never use them properly.
Fuel economy will be between 22 and 30mpg.... I get low 20's (my GF can get 30)
They are pretty nippy, for what they are, awesome off road, very cool, classless, will drift on the brakes if you are brave tow anything etc....
ETA that 220bhp+ is possible....
Hope this helps.
