hey guys, i must admit, thougth i have never been offroading in my life, ever, it is something that i've always loved the look of, me dad used to have a disco, but we never got chance to use that offroad and we haven't had a 4x4 since.
now i'm only 18 and of courser insurance would be sky high on pretty much anything, other than a Suzuki SJ.
now we'll be selling my dads vans soon to get me my first car (to use on the road, but not my FIRST car) and i was tempted by it at one point, bt thought something cheap and easy to to fix etc, but looking at this fourm and how cheap they are makes me want one and do some off roading, can anyone give some links to SJ sites, likly insurance for an 18 year old etc, would be much help, cheers guysclap

Quite a few useful links and tips here: http://www.suzukiclubuk.com/, they are mostly into SJs and know pretty much everything about them. The Suzuki forum at http://forum.difflock.com/  is also very good.

If you're looking for something for the road, consider a Vitara - technically not as good off road (though I have had no problems) but much nicer on the road, easier to drive and more reliable too.

Mine is insured through Roadsure, they did an unlimited mileage, unlimited modifications policy for £350 fully comp - but you don't get any NCB.

They shouldn't be. Remember that the on road performance of a 1.6 4x4 will bear no resemblance to that of a normal car in terms of acceleration and top speed.

My Shogun is a 3.0 V6 auto. Under normal circumstances you'd think a 3 litre V6 equate to rapid performance, but in this case, 0-60 is over 13 seconds, and top speed is 106 mph. That's almost exactly the same as a 1.2 Corsa!

Insurance is based on much more than engine size. If you find something not typically driven by young lads on a new licence, it will have far less history of being crashed by young lads on new licences, so you might find the results are surprising.

I'd also steer clear of places like confused.com and try some of the specialist insurers such as Adrian Flux etc who advertise in 4x4 mags.

The confused lot just don't "get" off roading and modifications...

id vote for a SJ/Samurai too. cant beat them for cheap moddable fun offroad.
I used to have a mate running one with a 130 cav SRi lump in when he was 19 & the insurance wasnt that much more than normal.

1.0 litre SJ, plenty about because they are very capable.
