Looking to buy myself a cheap but capable 4x4 to get into some offroading, but nothing extreme. (Still needs to be road legal with windows and relatively clean/tidy for occasional family use.) Something like a WK or WJ Grand Cherokee or a Discovery, but with decent tyres and a mild lift kit? A winch would be a bonus!

Whenever I search for Cherokees for sale I see nice-looking, bog-standard examples that seem to have been well cared for. Where are all the modified ones for sale? Is there a UK forum for people who are into the off-roading hobby and greenlaning? This PH forum seems pretty dead.

Would appreciate suggestions thumbup

That's a good shout. eBay too. I rarely use either of those services so I don't really think of looking at them. Thanks!

I suppose if you've spent £hundreds modifying a Discovery when its eventually falling apart you'll buy another of the same model and transfer the expensive mods onto the new shell, diff lockers winches longer springs and longer shocks etc are expensive you wouldn't get the value back selling them already fitted to the rare person who wants to go fun offroading, the exception to this might be overland prepared 70 and 80 series Landcruisers which are up for sale at frankly ridiculous prices, same as prepped Defenders, talking monopoly money there.

Good mods would probaby sell for better money than the complete vehicle, any properly used off roader is going to look a bit of a bugger after some hard use, most wives won't be mightily impressed with a battered muddy extra high Jeep or Disco turns up looking somewhat out of place among the Audis and Teslas outside most houses in the road, especially when it fires up with half the exhaust missing.

Most proper 4x4s with low range don't need much in the way of modding to have some fun, a good set of slightly larger mud tyres alone gives an inch or more of lift (check clearance at front wheelarches, sometimes narrower but larger diameter works better but doesn't give 'the look'), some sturdy underbody plates to protect the easily damaged parts if rocks are involved and you're good to go, at least to pay and play sites.

We had great fun in my old bog standard classic Range Rover sat on Colway remoulds, and my unmodded Landcruiser 70 series even on basic ATs was unstoppable.

Thanks Smint. You're probably right - some half-decent A/T tyres with reasonable road manners could be all I need to begin with if the car has low-range and some sort of traction control or locking diffs. I'm going to do some pay-and-play days and would like to be confident that I'm not going to get stuck (or rip the bumpers off) on the basic obstacles. My mate's bog-standard 3 year-old Wrangler was amazing in low range at one we did two weeks ago, even on (big) road tyres.

Appreciate your input.

If you buy a stock motor seriously consider spending circa £300 on diff and steering guards. Basic protection that could help you get home and avoid costly damage.
