Hi,

I want a car to for off road with my kids.
Was looking for a car around 4K but cannot find any decent one. Bumped the price to 10k and found GC 2009 one owner, full service history 75k miles on it. Going tomorrow to have a look. Limited edition though. They want 7.5k

Could get 2012-2013 with 100k miles for 10-11k but not sure if that it worth. Or more miles but no service history and 3 owners.

I will be not doing many miles and once, twice per year off road.
Do you think it’s good choice or should I be looking for something else?

I don’t want to spend too much because then I will be worried to go off road and scratch it 😜

I had a 56 plate GC Overland a few years back.

I loved it,

Is it this one your going to see?

Looks pretty decent. Tax will be high. You can buy pre March 2006 cars with cheaper tax.

At this age i'd buy on condition and history.

Yes. Going to have a look. Never droves GC so will find out if I like it. Looks good on pictures. That would be second one looking good on pictures. The previous one wouldn’t even start 🤦‍♂️

I will check under carriage for rust as that might be deal breaker. Anything I should be looking in particular apart of oil leaks?

Mine was fairly reliable. Glow plug controller needed replacing, and an abs speed sensor. Think that was about it over and above general maintenence. Parts could be source for a reasonable price via the internet.

Given the age of the car, most known faults should have been sorted by now.

Check for corrosion. Tyres, brakes etc. Listen for knocks and bangs from suspension or a drone from the dif. Drivers seat bolster was known to wear badly, but not an expensive fix.

Thanks for the tips.

Now I found 2005 72k milage for 4.5k. Does it make any difference the 4 years? Both old like me but tax cheeper smile

What about petrol engine with LPG? Does it make a sense to look for LPG where the cost will be lower? Well I will not drive much so maybe I just answered myself. That makes a sensie if you drive much I think.

Still going to check the one 2row.

Yeah so I went to see the car. All good but ...

1) when accelerating, I can hear a whooshing noise. It only happens on the move (checked when parked and no noise) - doesn't matter what speed and only during acceleration. Once you take the foot from the acceleration - noise is gone. The noise can be heard before the car actually accelerate. There is a delay - like a second - from the time you press the acceleration -> noise -> ~ one second -> car start to accelerate.

I think either some belt, or after checking on internet - turbo? The car dealer says it's normal to him - I am not sure - never drove a Grand Cherokee before, but I find it strange.

2) Leaking rear diff - apparently diff seal and bleed pipe to be replaced by them

Cannot add link to under carriage picture

3) Rust under carriage - I think ok taking into consideration the age - rustproofing to be done ASAP to start with.

I’ve been smoking about in a 2009 GC, tax aside it’s a nice place to be. If you are playing offroad then the overland is probably worth hunting out.

Gets you the 3 e lockers and a full set of underside skids. It’s not that high as stock it will drag.

It’s not as good as a disco 4 offroad as it can’t raise up and get out of trouble, but it’s pretty decent and has fair road manners. In terms of complexity having steel springs and a handbrake with a real lever and cables is no bad thing!

Yeap - the car is gone. Someone bought it.

Regarding the noise, I found an explanation on other forum - leak in the hose to the turbo - maybe that was the issue.
[Cannot add link, sic!]

Still looking for my GC. Good thing is that I drove 2009 and 2012. I know what to expect and will be able to compare now.
Found 2009 to be much bigger inside than 2012 - at least for me.

I read on internet that GC 2005-2010 can do up to 200k miles (exception 300k) so do you think that full-service history and 130k could still be a good deal?

What do you think about car with 3/4/5 previous owners?
