Cherokee owners - help me choose!

I’m viewing 2 Cherokees (not Grand) tomorrow and would love any input please. Bit of head Vs heart on this one
I’m just getting rid of a troublesome Shogun so, accepting all second hand cars can have issues, the likely-to-be more reliable is the one I’d like!
2010 diesel - recent expensive work, service etc. only issue on MOT is corrosion at exhaust and the tyre pressure light which has been on for 2 years!
Given it’s 2 years I assume a faulty sensor or similar and not much to worry about?
Private sale.
2004 petrol - very clean car, clean history, lower tax, no belts to worry about. Easy to work on. I can’t find very much online about the petrol ones.
For sale at a very reputable dealer who’s raved about on owners forums/reviews with 6 months warranty.
I’m not fussed about MPG or the extra torque of diesel overall. I’m imagining the petrol may be more reliable (?) and I don’t do a lot of long trips.
But heart kind of into the later one because toys, potential longevity, looks…

We have had several from the 2003-2005 era, both diesel and petrol. The 2010 is the newer shape, shares underpinnings with the Dodge Nitro. If you do not need low ratio, or do much off-road I recommend the Nitro over the Cherokee, we had a 2009 CRD for a while.
The earlier models were very thirsty, the 3.7 will be in the mid-to-high teens, with no performance advantage over the 2.8 CRD, the earlier 2.5 CRD is not worth looking at. The 2.8 CRD will be in the high 20s.
All ours suffered from various issues, including rust, brakes seizing, rattles etc. The brake issue was the only one that stopped the vehicle. No problems with the Nitro at all. We spent a very enjoyable New Year's Eve crossing Europe in a snow storm. Autobahns closed, so used other roads, we still made the ferry on time.

The 4.0 is renowned for its reliability. A lot will have been LPG'd by now, mine was. Meant running it was relatively cheap.
The heavy tank did take its toll on the original springs so I ordered a heavy duty set. Mine was a 99 i think and was fairly rotten underneath by the time I sold it.

But hear you about various niggles. Can’t find much that doesn’t in some way, although open to ideas. Landcruisers have gone crazy money as otherwise would be my choice.

Niggles are part of motoring and are only going to get worse with the computerisation era. Older cars are going to be a nightmare to run. Most niggles don't stop the car so we put up with them for the sake of more 'reliability' in that it will get me there.
I am considering going back to 'classics' when my mileage is cut significantly in the next year or so.

I have a 2008 3.7 V6 petrol with about 140k on the clock - mainly used for the odd bit of towing and mobile dog kennel - excellent car for my purposes but it does have a habit of randomly throwing warning lights but probably more down to standing around for long periods. Unfortunately the 2010 threw an EML during the test drive and wasn’t making power. Ironically the tyre pressure light was fixed!
I did find the ride horrible however. In comparison the shogun is like driving a big sofa.
Back to the drawing board. Also considering a pathfinder among other things now.

I had a 2009 Cherokee 2.8CRD for nearly 4 years. It was a fantastic car (I'm not normally a fan of SUV's) and was totally reliable. The only issues I had were with the OEM SatNav which died completely and the drivers seat which spilt (they all do that sir).
It was a very low mileage car when I bought it and although it was my only car, I only put about 15,000 miles on it during my ownership. Check for rust on the chassis at the rear. I looked at several before I bought mine and they were all unbelievably rusty.
Shame you weren't in the market for one this time last year. It was almost exactly to the day that I sold mine.

Collected this Friday! Did a 400 mile round trip over the weekend no issues.
It’s not either of the cars I posted about. It popped up fairly locally.
2002, 1 owner from new, 42k miles and everything you’d want done to it. Immaculate. Clearly never seen a blade of grass never mind gone off road.
It’s the 3.7 petrol and absolutely love the engine!
Seats and ride a little hard but that’s very minor.
Hopefully a keeper!
