Thinking of getting a 2016 Shogun - mint, low mileage - to replace my ageing Forester. Thoughts, opinions, advice welcomed.

How much is it?.
A friend of mine had a few issues with his mk4 Shogun, mostly with the DPF IIRC.

The few I am seeing seem to be between £20k and £22k. Prices are high, so there is an argument for waiting until they come down again.

I ran a 2013 Shogun for 3 years. never had any trouble with it. If it were me I'd check that the shift from 2H to 4H and back again works without any issues. You can do that on the move - I forget what the upper speed limit is for doing that.

If you are going to do any off roading in it, I think that 18" wheels are probably a better option than the 20" on the higher spec models, simply because they run a higher profile tyre, which will keep the (very expensive) rims further away from odd bits of landscape. And high kerbs.

The cabin is a nice place to be, although the instrumentation, ICE and things like the trip computer are a bit pre-historic by today's standards.

On road, they can be hustled along quite quickly for something with the weight and suspension setup it has.

I 'd have another one, although with the price of diesel where it is I'm not sure I'd want to be doing mega miles. they're thirsty old things.

If you can afford to stretch the budget a bit I’d probably pay the extra for a similar age Landcruiser to be honest.

I agree, but don't overpay for ridiculously overdescribed dealer fodder, the very first place you inspect one is underneath for excess chassis rust, in that context try and avoid cars which have lived in Scotland or the far north.
The same applies to Shoguns and most other ladder chassis 4x4's re rust.

I ran a 14 plate for a year, no issues apart from factory alarm fault which couldn’t get sorted. Fantastic during winter and rural off-road. Mine was a manual and I transformed its drive and mpg using a BlueSpark Pro chip box.

I set out to get a Landcruiser - my other car is a '52 plate Colorado, which is still awesome - but the difference in price for the same capability is eye watering. Working on the basis that I only take it will only do around 6500 miles per annum, only go off road a handful of times in the shooting season, and I probably won't keep it as long as I have the other LC, I started looking at Shoguns.

Still don't know if I am right to do so. I am also looking at Touaregs ('Escape' version with proper low box, locks etc) as SWMBO prefers the idea. Reduces boot space though.

I’ve got a ‘97 SWB Colorado and love it so can relate to that one, although I really would like to get an 80 or 100 Series before they get too expensive!.
The difference in price between a similar age Shogun and Landcruiser is noticeable and significant I can’t disagree!, while the Mitsubishi is a good car, from seeing the issues a friend had with his, if it were me I’d probably stump up the extra if I were in a position to do so, Landcruiser will hold its money better when you do decide to sell on too.

They're 3x the price.

A very quick look seems to be you can get a decent 2016 Shogun for 22-25k and the cheapest 2016 Landcruiser is 30k, more expensive, yes, definitely, 3 times the price, hardly.
