I have a 2012 discovery 4 HSE with the stock 20" rims, I'm increasingly needing to get up and down farm tracks and field edges and the current m&s tyres (conti cross contact I think) are not really up to the job.

I'm looking at AT Grabbers or similar so if I want to keep the same overall diameter to avoid issues with speedo, what would be the best wheel/tyre size combo?

D3s and 4s came with a range of wheel sizes from 17 to 20.

Are you planning on used smaller OEM wheels or aftermarket?

If you're sticking with OEM, get whatever size tyres they came with from the factory.

Thanks, I had thought to go to 19" OEM - 18s and smaller don't fit the D4 apparently

I assume the brake discs are larger on a d4 compared to d3 then? I thought the discovery 3 and 4 was the same car the later just facelifted

Whilst it's the same chassis, a lot of the running gear was changed...

IMO - A standard set of 19" rims, with a set of 255 ATs, should do the job nicely (I can't remember the Disco sizing off hand but the standard combinations will be on a sticker in one of the front door jams somewhere).

Look at a company called no road club. They are also on Instagram. The specialise in putting off-road wheels and tires on defenders and discos

‘Jamb’ as in French for ‘leg’.

Well, that's slightly embarrassing, I hadn't spotted the label on the door that clearly describes wheel/tyre combos.

Off to eBay now for a new set of wheels, thank you all

Ta.

I knew they were slightly larger than the RRS but couldn't remember if the RRS was /50 or /55.

My Disco 4 is on 255/55/19 Grabber AT3s. The only thing I would say is they are a very noisy tyre on the Motorway. Saying that the Cooper Discoverer AT3 Sport are not significantly better and any AT tyre is going to be noisy.

Have had few combinations of tyres on a disco 4 over the years:

Pirelli Scorpions 250/50r20 we’re good on road and surprisingly good in snow too.
Got rid of the 20s for 19s due to to bumpy ride I felt after about a year. Long story short, the demo car I test drove had 19s and then when I order mine I went for 20s though all ways thought it wasn't as plush let’s say on the ride compared to the 19s, hence the swap in tire size.

Goodyear Duratracs 255/55r19 brilliant off-road, noise on road especially at 50mph at 70mph seamed to be not as bad. Lasted nearly 30,000miles.

Goodyear all weather think they were called 255/55r19 not to bad all round, was doing more motorway driving so went for these. Surprisingly these were the worst tyres so far for MPG 28 at best.

Pirelli All Terrian Plus 255/55r19 is the current tyres I’ve got and I must say there brilliant so far, handle off-road no worry’s and snow. Motorway driving not noisy. 30MPG.
Highly recommend them.
