Off Road Tyre Sizes

My Shogun runs on 265 x 70 x 16 tyres an I understand what those numbers mean.
In the off roading world, the tyres most often talked about are 31inch and 33 inch tyres. I'll be looking for some new tyres soon, but how do you compare one method of sizing with the other?

I have often wondered the same.
The tyre size app I have on my phone shows your current tyres as having a diameter of 30.6 inches, if that helps.

Easiest way is use a metric to inch conversion chart. Linked one with common off roading sizes

It's just Americans. 33" is just the full height of the tyre so gives no indication of width, tyre wall or wheel size.

For off-road performance, we prefer to stick to the rule of thumb of running a wheel diameter no bigger than half the tire height. That typically means 15 or 16-inch wheels for 33s and 17-inch wheels for 35s or so. If you want sufficient sidewall flex on the trail, stay away from lower-profile tires.

265/70/16 is equivalent to 30.6" tires. You can even run 265/75/16 which is slightly taller. My friend has this tire size, and no rubbing issues according to him. Is your Shogun lifted? If not, there are cheap lift kits that can improve the off-road reliability of your car.
