Discussion
Hi, I’ve noticed that Imber village is open to the public this weekend. Was thinking about heading over to take a look around.
I’ve not been up on the plains before, does anyone have any advice on the trip or other places to go when up there?
I’ll be in a 4x4 but will be by myself which is probably less than ideal for laning.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Imber is accessible via sealed tracks so no worries there.
I suggest you look at the green lane association (GLASS) website and contact their Wiltshire rep.
Definitely do not explore the area alone if new to green laning or unskilled at proper navigating. The vehicular rights of way are all now clearly waymarked thanks to GLASS but once beyond the signs it is easy to find yourself on the wrong track.
Trespassing, inadvertent or not, is not viewed lightly and, being a firing range, may have lethal consequences.
Also look at the range opening times.
Membership is well worth the fee with tools like Trailwise2 and the network of members and area representatives.
PM me if you want to know more.

I visited Imber a couple of weeks back.
Quite a lot to see, if that is the sort of thing you are interested in. All the approach roads are hard surfaced. Car parking is in a largish field. There were volunteers doing work while I was there. They were canvassing for additional volunteers.
The whole area is one large firing range. Trespassing would be unwise.
Edit
Lots of stuff on Google - for starters:-

Edit.
Sorry. Wrong village.

Very wise words. Also look at the range opening times.
SPTA is widely and entirely incorrectly viewed as a massive (Don’t) Pay&Play which it simply isn’t. Another misconception is that because it’s MoD land, MoD = taxpayer = public.
There used to be far more of it available for public use, although much of it has now been closed off, largely due to inappropriate use and people thinking red flags don’t apply to them.
Imber is an easy drive in sealed roads.
There isn’t that much to see. The church is still intact (if you like that sort of thing) but most of the buildings I believe are significantly post-war.
Thanks for all the replies. I’ve read the MOD guide found here https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen...
Understood on the red flags and I’ve no intention of going off piste.
