Disco 3 57 plate cam belt and oil pump change?

I was told recently by a Land Rover mechanic that it's "common knowledge" that 57 plate discos need an oil pump up-grade at the same time as they have a cam belt change - it this true? My Disco 3 just suffered catastrophic engine failure six weeks after I bought it due to an oil pump coming off and subsequently loosening the cam belts etc. The master tech who inspected it prior to me buying said it was just "bad luck" - is he right?

My father didn't, 1500 miles later. It was back having the oil pump replaced and timing belt done again.
