I'm not in the UK. I'm in the continent. But they are pretty rare here too. It seems body rust was the main problem. But I have found them in good condition and no or minimal body rust. The underneath is fine for rust.
My worry is mechanical and electrical reliability, plus replacement parts.

I had one for a year or so. As said, rust was a big issue. Seemed to be reliable enough for me and parts should be easily got as the Mk2 and possibly 3 were very similar if not identical underneath. Great machine and not as bad a driver as it looks. Main thing on early shoguns was the gearbox. It seemed to need changed at around 120-150k miles in every one I've ever known. Timing belts have a shortish service life too but I can't remember now how long.
I suspect the Gen 2 might be similar. The Gen 3 is completely different, different engines, chassis and all independent suspension.
For parts, best thing to do is have a Google for some parts. Take a look on ebay and see if you can find things like discs/pads, alternator, bushes etc. If you can't, then they might not be so easy to get.

I have a 95 Pajero Jap import, 2.8 TD intercooler, Automatic.....................Mk2 Shogun I believe.
Use it every day as a mobile dog kennel. Not spent a penny on it in 2yrs. Bit of a tank, do a fair bit of light offroad across fields / muddy tracks......never failed to start or even looked like getting stuck at any time and even recently in the snow around hilly Bath I never had to resort to Low drive / diff lock etc.......... will probably keep it until it becomes too uneconomic to repair.

Thanks. Which gearbox is problematic? The automatic or manual?

Thanks. Did you have any problems with the head and headgasket? I heard something about it. How is the 2.5 engine by the way?Use it every day as a mobile dog kennel. Not spent a penny on it in 2yrs. Only whinge I suppose could be that that mine may need the fuel pump reset as it is a bit down on power and smokes at bit when cold and may be due to overfueling............I have been told this is common with Jap imports as the pump gets reset when sent here.

I had a mk2 2.8td lwb Shogun maybe 4 or 5 years ago.
Rust was starting to take hold. What killed it for me though was the head cracking. I had it fixed but sold it on.
Apart from that I actually quite liked it. Fuel consumption was terrible, but it would go anywhere and could seat 7.
Don't expect much refinement. The auto box helped a bit as I believe the manual was pretty poor.

Mine was the 2.5. It wasnt very strong by any standards but had enough to get through.
I have no experience of auto, manual is the one I'm talikng about. They didn't really give problems but 150k was more just their life span. As usual though I'm sure driving style and previous use contribute to this. I really enjoyed owning mine.

I'll add to this later, if you are still looking for info on the first series but for the time being:
