Pickups - L200, Hilux, Dmax
Discussion
I've read all the internet has to offer on this subject and yet still I am uncertain. I'm looking to replace my defender 90 TD5 with a pickup (I have an off-road bike, a smelly dog, and go shooting, so it will be used both as a truck for activities and also my everyday car).
I really want a hilux or dmax as I like the styling, reliability etc but for my budget (around 11k), I'm looking at around 2010ish and mileage of 100k and up. Surprisingly for the same money on an L200 I might get a 2012ish model with 60k miles, but I'm not keen on the styling of them and they have them at work so I see them as a bit more commercial I spose. I would like the opinions of this wonderful forum to help me work out how safe a high mileage hilux is, vs a medium mileage L200, and any particular recommendations for my situation?
And for what it's worth I'm not afraid of high mileage vehicles (I've only owned one car sub 100k miles), but reliability is top of my priorities this time.
Cheers

Is cheap finance on a new one an option? We bought a Hilux double-cab a while back on tick and it was almost free.I really want a hilux or dmax as I like the styling, reliability etc but for my budget (around 11k), I'm looking at around 2010ish and mileage of 100k and up. In fact it was better than free, it was massively profitable, but that isn't relevant now.
I've always been against buying brand new but approved used with a bit of lending could be a consideration. I don't want to stray too much above my budget though ideally.
Ref 110s. Main reason is that with most normal double cabs you can just about manage to put a dirtbike in the back with the tailgate down. Not something people generally do too often as you need a big ramp and guts, but it's a possibility. With 110s thats a non starter. Plus the lack of mod cons in my defender is growing old on me now in honesty.
I should also add I'm really set on an auto, but hilux and dmax autos are very rare at my budget. L200 autos plentiful.

I like Amaroks, but they are pretty expensive as the older models look the same or very similar to the present one. No doubt vw will launch a new model soon and the current model will reduce quite a bit, but at the moment my budget would only get me one with around 140k miles on it. Shame as I really like them.
Despite the snobbishness on here towards to L200, it's got a lot to offer.
For 11k , you're looking at a Series 4, and ideally for your purposes, you'd want a long bed version.
Trim goes up from 4work, 4life, Trojan, Warrior, Barbarian from about 2012 onwards, and there was a run out Challenger model up to 2016.
I'd go for something like this Warrior, higher powered (178bhp), 2014 and still in warranty.

Thanks for that,
I am tempted by the L200s and they are growing on me for sure, but it's the mileage which makes them the more likely choice at this point. L200s in budget with 60k miles have got to be better bets than hilux's with 100k+? At least that's the dilemma I can't find an answer for.

Didn't want to start a new topic on this but my search continues and I've moved away from L200 (just don't like the curvey look). Hiluxes remain silly expensive (10k for one with 150k miles etc), and I have broadened my search to include top spec Navaras. I'm set on an auto and used prices are competitive.
Locally there's an 09 one with 70k miles, and a 10 plate one with 110k miles. Pretty much the same price (9500). Both autos, both got all the gadgets. The 10 plate one is the facelift model so slightly better interior, but 40k miles more on it.
I'm going to see both but wondered what the conventional wisdom is on these things. I know opinions on navara reliability are pretty divided anyway, but one school of thought is that low milage = reliability. Another school of thought say's if its got 110k miles, then its probably a good one, as if its a bad one things start to go wrong around the 60-70k mile mark anyway.
I'll go and drive both and see with my own eyes. But if all it comes to down to is a question of mileage, then the 70k mile one should be the obvious choice right??!

I quite like to look of the Rangers, certainly worth taking a look at. Hilux's have a solid reputation, but isn't the 2010 version a bit fugly looking? Shame we don't get the Tacoma over here.
On that note, you might find a Ram or F150 in budget. Although they do hold their money well. Plenty of people and hauling room, most are autos and will normally be well attired.

I ran 2 Rangers over the last 4 years & covered around 100k between the two. 1st was a Limited, 2nd a Wildtrack & between the 2, beyond consumables (inc 1 x puncture), I had a single headlight bulb go. Looks like there's a few 2011 to 2013, Limited & XL's on Autotrader in budget, some with 5 figure mileages.
Alternatively - how about a D-Max? My employers ran 4/5 before the Rangers arrived & they were pretty good, although I only briefly drove one. A bit more agricultural than the Fords, but tough & reliable. Haven't driven an L200 I'm afraid.
