Gen 1 Shogun 3Door
Discussion
Depends what you want it for?
I've had a long wheel base 1988 mark one for 6 years; there is a 'readers cars' thread here:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
It is more refined than a Defender; quieter, better riding but not up to a Discovery (which would be a Shogun mark 2 rival).
Mine has been very reliable and more than that it refuses to be put off by component failure, i.e. it got me home from Yorkshire to Wiltshire in 4th gear with a broken gearbox.
It is rust that will get it in the end; check the MOT history and get underneath to have a look.
I don't offroad, nor green lane mine but I believe they will be as good as the driver and the tyres; the mark one's have a selectable fixed centre diff that sends torque front to back 50/50, it may have an LSD fitted as OEM spec and you can fit a air locking rear diff if you must! On road they are really rear wheel drive only and you have to stop to engage all wheel drive; I've never found this a prblem in snow/mud.
Mine is used almost exclusively on tarmac and they only thing I really miss is anti lock braking (that's available on the post 1991 mark two, together with an auto option and a more sophisticated all wheel drive system).
I'm very reluctant to move on to something more modern as it has a charm and utility that I find hard to beat.
Let me know if you have a specific question.

I had a swb one for a couple of years. Absolutely loved it and wish I had never sold it. Had over 150k on it and ran like a Swiss watch.
Not the most powerful machine (2.5 TD) but could pull its fair share. If you take into consideration how old it is I would say you will be pretty impressed with how it drives for a 4x4. Definitely better than my 95 Cherokee xj suspension wise. Off road it was brilliant.
Things to watch for
- chassis rust (common on any older 4x4s)
- Gearbox most shoguns seem to fail at around 120-130k (Mine was replaced before I bought it) Again fairly common for most 4x4s.
- Certain engines need timing belt replaced on the button.
I don't think you will regret buying one if you manage to get one that doesn't have major rust issues, provided you bear in mind it is a 30+ year old 4x4.

I had a Mk2 for a while (1993, SWB 2.8TD Intercooler - 123bhp version). Mine was a Pajerio (Import version) and it had a two inch body lift with big Mud Terrains fitted. Used it off road a few times and it was pretty good.
Also very comfortable and juicy on fuel. It had a few rust bubbles coming through on the windscreen pillar.
I would want to check over a Mk1 very carefully for rust. Interior is pretty robust and some came in a very taseful brown colour.
If memory serves, the Mk1 ran parabolics and they can rist solid and be a big to remove. Hangers could also have rusted out. Parabolics are big and heavy things to change on your own too.
The 2.8 diesel in mine was supper smooth and a very nice engine. Mrs BakerStreet drove it for four months when I changed jobs and even she liked driving it.
