Pinzgauer vs. Unimog
Discussion
A couple questions here... mainly out of curiosity...
In your opinion what's better? A Pinzgauer (4WD or 6WD) or a Unimog? That may be an apples to oranges comparison for all I know, but like I said, I'm just curious.
Personally, I'd be more interested in the Pinz. So that leads me to my second question: Is there any places in the UK where they're available? Auction houses or military surplus dealers?
Thanks!

Depends.
Most Unimogs are much bigger (a pain in the woods) and much heavier (a pain to recover if it gets stuck).
And believe me, they can get stuck.
The Pinzgauer is very capable as well.
Both are ultracool.
For fun and big loads: Unimog.
For fun and small loads: Puch Pinzgauer.
For fun and fun: Puch Haflinger.
I am not sure, but spareparts may be easier to get for the Unimog.

A Pinzgauer is faster on the road but both have their share of underpowered engines. They rely on low gearing to get the job done. Mogs can have faster portals to give you better road speeds and Pinzgauers most recent engines - the VW 5-cyl - can get up towards 180bhp which makes them very useful.
SGB is where I'd go for a Pinzgauer and Atkinson Vos for a Mog.
Then there's the Hagglund...

Wow thats my old Unimog, I had it from 2016 until late 2020!!!
I sold that Unimog in 2016 to a farmer from Aberdeenshire, he said he was buying it for his son. If that was you then your dad is a very nice chap but an extremely hard negotiator I hope you enjoyed owning it, it was a pretty good bit of kit just very very slow !! I would definitely get the turbo model next time.bigblock said:

I would definitely get the turbo model next time.I used to work on Pinzgauer in the Army, we had a mix of older manual and newer automatic ones and also 4x4 and 6x6. They are bloody noisy, especially on a long run, a pain to work on, especially the newer ones as the seats need to come out to access the engine properly and they used to drink fuel. They are however fantastic fun off road and can be pointed at most things and get over or through it, the central spine and independent suspension works really well, but does require some adjustment of the load sensing valve as otherwise they can sit wrong and the suspension gains mad levels of camber! The later ones used VAGCOM diagnostic system and parts can be ordered directly from Austria, I have recently had to order some for a SteyrPuch G wagon we have a work and they came in a couple of days.
In my current job we have a 2008 unimog and it is an amazing bit of kit, although I have only driven in on road it gives you a real sense that you could straight line it through buildings, trees etc and get where you need to be! I am not sure I would want to do major mechanical stuff to it though.

I didn't actually find it that slow, but I am comparing it to tractors so it was fairly a lot quicker than them.
