Grand cherokee WJ - Alternator failed ???
Discussion
Hi guys,
Im suspecting the alternator has failed on my 2004, 92k miles WJ.
Im only getting 11 to 12 V when its on tick over, not the usual 14 V on the dash gauge. Battery died today so thats how I knew someting was up. But over the past week I kept thinking the dash lights seemed a little dim and the headlights were not as bright as I remembered.
So whats the best option regards a replacement, recon unit cheaper than new, who to buy from ?
Are there any online guides to doing this job, it looks burried in the engine compartment.
Cheers

Your not having much luck are you?
I've not needed an alternator so can't help there other than suggesting the usual suspects.
You could try this fella (Chris)
Ebay
I've had various bits off him and if not listed, then just asked if he has it available.
A question for you though, do you have the pdf workshop manual?
If not, then pm me your address and I'll drop a copy on disc in the post.

Regarding the pdf maintenance manual, do you want/need a copy?
You sent me one back a few years ago mate ! Regarding the pdf maintenance manual, do you want/need a copy?
My local auto electrician seems to be off sick at the moment, so I'm still waiting to get this locked at. Done a little reading online and it could be several things, lets hope it quick and cheap !!
Finally got it sorted. Found a local guy who rebuilds alternators and I had new brushes, slip rings, bearings and clutch pulley fitted for £130. He told me I could get away with just the brushes and slip rings, but I said while its off lets do a proper job.
Off the shelf units seem to go for £170, but do you really know what they have done ?
The main hassle is the removal and fitting, allow 1.5 hrs for each. Its just bloody awkward !!
