Land Rover Disco 300tdi complete oil change
Discussion
Hello folks
I have been researching online for what tools and oils I need to do a oil change on my 300tdi Discovery (manual). I've been on all the Landy forums and have become completely overwhelmed by the conflicting information on what is best.
All I wanted to know is what oils I need and also what tools I need to use.
It would appear that the
- engine needs 6.5ltrs of semi synth 15w 40 (although that has been debatable for universal tractor oil)\
- gearbox and transfer well I have no idea, as there are lots of varying comments on what to use
As for tools again no idea.
This is my first Land Rover and I want to make sure that I have everything I need before I start a job. I'm not new to maintenance, as I've looked after all my previous cars.
Thank you
PB

15w40 is fine; although if you live somewhere that gets cold by UK standards it might be a good idea to go for 10w40. LR specify that 15w oils are fine down to -10C, 10w down to -20C and 5w -30C. Whatever it is it should meet API CD or better.
LR workshop manual gives these;
approx capacity in litres and recommended lubricant
gearbox 2.2 - ATF type G
transfer box 2.8 - SAE 90EP gear oil
front diff 1.7 - SAE 90EP gear oil
rear diff (salisbury) 2.3 - SAE 90EP gear oil[I can't find a figure for the non-salisbury rear diff but it will probably be ~2.0]
swivel housing(each) 0.35 - SAE 90EP gear oil
power steering system 5.0 - ATF Dexron IID
The propshaft greasing points take any multipurpose grease; getting it into them regularly is far more important than fussing about what type it is.

Those swivel grease tubes are cheap enough anyway. Diffs and transfer box is also o.k with 75/90 synth. Try a tube of molyslip in the box aswell and and it will give a whole slicker feel...And before anyone say otherwise moly in boxes works beyound imagination. Lost count how many I have done and difference it has made to all from sports cars to 4x4.
