So bought another Frontera, tyres are all different and knackered! Need to swap them out but struggling to choose, will be going down the AT route, as I do some light laning and pay and play, but like most I am on road for the most part and cant justify a second set of MT's for the play stuff just yet.

Looking about I have narrowed it down to:

Yoko Geolander AT G012 (Used to run these on my previous, never had issues on or offroad, but why stay narrow minded aye! smile )
Hankook Dynapro ATm
General Grabber AT2
General Grabber AT
BF Goodrich AT

So, edumacate me guys!

I have had BFG AT/KOs, they were pretty good all round and by all accounts wear very well, they were not bad in deep snow but pretty terrible on packed snow & ice. I have also had the General Grabber AT for a short while, I thought they were not bad at all but didn't have a chance to test them in winter conditions or track their wear rate.

What I have currently is the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx which I would rate as the best AT tyre I've ever experienced. I took them on a month long trip to Iceland this August and they were superb, no noticeable noise and good road handling for the long motorway slogs there and back and impeccable off-road manners. They were driven thousands of miles over gravel, rock, sand, mud, snow, deep water and anything else you care to mention and not once did they ever lack for traction or suffer any damage. They also did a preliminary shakedown payNPlay day and were simply outstanding. If you can get them in your size I would absolutely recommend them.

Whilst I can't admit to doing as thorough a test as above I'd still like to recommend the Falken WildPeak. After searching for a while to find something in a suitable size for my Shogun I settled on these.

They've been on for about 1000 miles now so I cannot comment on how they wear although lots of people report over 40K miles on a set.

They are quieter on the road than the Pirelli Scorpion Zero's that came off and the stronger sidewalls have massively reduced the swaying nature of the ride.

They get used in the mud and are yet to let me down. They'll be tested further as the shooting season continues!

At 'nearly' half the price of BFG's I just couldn't ignore them!

Grabber ATs are putting in at least 40k miles under my Discovery 3; two winters without snow means I haven't really tested them and they don't have fine sipes in the tread so I suspect they'll be okay on snow but not so hot on ice; they have, however, been pretty trustworthy off the road and quiet on it.

Pirelli ATR might also be worth a look.

I got 30,000 out of a set of 17" Cooper Discoverer ST's under my two Discovery 3's
And 40,000 out of a set of 19" Goodyear Wrangler MTR's under my second Discovery 3 AFTER someone else had done 10,000 miles on them first
BUT - both very noisy compared to the dogs danglies which were the 18" Pirelli Scorpion ATR's I finished on

Looking at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 on the next one

I've used Grabber ATs for the last two years. Been faultless on tarmac, water and snow. Maybe not so good in mud. Hardly any wear at all and very quiet.

I had General Grabber A/Ts on my X-Trail. OK in mud and snow but terrible on damp roads. Didn't seem to have any wear in the last 10k miles. I've got shot of the X-Trail and now have a Defender which came with a set of knackered BFG Mud Terrains which I have ditched for the new BFG A/T KO2. They seem pretty good in the muddy field - better than the Grabbers but that may be down to the Defender being a lot better than the Nissan.

Thumbs up for the General Grabber A/T, have them on my old 90 as road wheels in 235 75 16 and after 20,000 they are showing very little signs of wear + did a play day on them as cba to change to the big 31 inch Khumo Kl-71's and was impressed how good they were within reason.

We have also got a set of them on a 2012 TDV8 range rover in some very wide size 275 55 r20 maybe? and they are great on snow and fields + wearing at half the rate of the continentals it came on. However road grip is a little less and they do get noisy above 100 but overall great tyres!

Just an update on this..

I opted for the Yoko Geolander AT/S in the end. Good experience with them in the past and got offered a good deal on them. Just as impressed with them this time as last! Thanks for the advice all. I will be getting some proper mud tyres for the harder pay and play I am planning, but these will cover the light work I am doing for now!
