Hi

Considering one of these as a family car and to tow a horse box. Any owners views? Have seen some nice ones on the trader so is there anything I need to look out for.

Understand its a merc engine with a chain but is it true there is a serp belt that needs changing at 50K.

Amazing what you can get bang for buck wise.

Not sure if the interval but yes there is a serpentine belt. However it isn't a huge job to change. Cost about 15£

Might even be very easy on a gc. Same engine in mine might be more room on a gc.

There are other issues though however do not panic.

There is sone sort of motor inside the v. To do with emissions. Due to oil leaks from the air intake into the turbo it can fail.

Mercedes upgraded the pipe but never bothered telling Chrysler.

There are things you can do to stop it happening but if it does happen you have two choices get a new one for a grand or unplug it and fit a 10pence resistor.

The other is a similar valve but that can be bypassed too.

Other than that these are very reliable engines.

Pesty you are referring to the swirl motor that sits in the V Bank below where the air intake connects to the turbo.

Jeeps orange o-ring filter was crap but some don't leak.

The upgrade part is a whole new plastic pipe with a black ring insert.

Costs £130 from dealer.

Serp belt isn't expensive and can be done with removing the intercooler hose and grill to make it easy.

I had a commander but remapped it to cut out the swirl motor so it never bothered me.

They can suffer from a horrendous oil leak which comes from the oil cooler seals in the V, it's a fairly big job but the parts are just a couple of quid.

The seals were updated on later ones, we've changed them on vehicles upto 08.

I've got an 06 Overland and love it, the only issue I have had is that the boot floor is quite high so it's load carrying capacity is a bit rubbish for the size of the car...

ETA: make sure the low range works, if it doesn't it needs to go to a dealer for the latest software update.

Not if first registered before March 2006, so 55 plates and early 06 plates qualify for the cheaper tax.

I'm considering one of these myself, they look fairly good value.
