2015 ranger vs amarok?
Discussion
Tried both, bought the Amarok, had no issues and no regrets, drives very well on road and haven't managed to get it stuck off road. I've got the manual complete with clunky gearchange, the 180 8spd auto is a better package and has a little more torque than the 'clutch limited' manual.
I thought the Ranger would be much quicker and more refined with its big 5 pot motor but, for some reason, it wasn't. I also thought the Amarok would be much more economical, it isn't, both will do 30mpg.
Later Amarok's are better than mine, more power and torque, more refined, better headlights and any early niggles sorted.
You won't go wrong with either though.

The auto amarok, is a lot more money so I am not prepared to pay so much more than a manual, I need to get a test drive I think!?
The clunky gearchange on the manual Amarok was fixed in 2012 and it's now a decent shifter, you also get a low range transfer box which the auto's don't get, instead they get a very low 1st gear but are still compromised in ultimate off road control. Be interested to hear your thoughts once you've tried both.
I was going to buy an amarok outright, by going up the auctions and buying ex lease, but a friend of mine who is very much in the know said don't buy pre 2013, as these are made in Argentina, so I concluded lease purchase the way to go, and I parked next to aspanking Ranger yesterday and thought it was a lovely looking thing, like I say must get a drive..

We've ordered a Wildtrak 3.2 manual on lease. That was after driving a 180 Amarok for a day, 2.2 manual Ranger Ltd, and a 3.2 Wildtrak auto. Discounted the Hi-lux,Navara and Isuzu without driving them.
What is it that swayed you to the Ranger ? What was wrong with the Auto box?More torque, lower down, nicer cabin, better seats and trim on the Wildtrak IMHO, more room in the back of the cabin plus a better towing capacity. The Amarok felt more like a petrol engine In comparison. The sales bod said I'd love the auto, waxing lyrical, so off I went with an open mind. It always felt like it was one or two gears too low. It seemed to be using revs as opposed to the torque the engine produces. Even when shifting the auto 'manually' it wasn't very impressive.. I'm afraid there isn't an auto built yet that changes/selects gears the way I want to. I also suspect I'd be even less impressed if I was towing with it.But hey, we're all different, go and drive them and see what you think.
Good luck in whatever you choose.

A friend is a Toyota service manager, he reckons they drive nicer than the VW, what do we think?
Brand loyalty to outdated vehicle by employee. You're on the right track having narrowed it down to Ranger or Amarok.
'Normalbloke' posted that the Ranger had more torque lower down than the VW and he's right, the engine's 60% bigger and the Amarok's 2.0 litre won't make meaningful shove until the puffers start blowing at 1250rpm - 'aint no replacement for displacement etc.......
The seats and interior are subjective preferences, I prefer the VW, you might not.
I've been running a hilux for 2 years ,
Still pleased with it and zero faults
Good fuel consumption and a very safe choice
As regards running costs and reasale value,
I discounted the ranger because of the transt engine
and the amacroc because it looked and drove like a spongey old estate car.

It's been an interesting change in direction for us with regards to motoring costs. Switching to lease, we no longer care about depreciation, residuals and more pressingly, post warranty reliability, which is the main reason we are no longer buying. There is no longer a manufacturer that intills the slightest confidence in me, that it won't cost £1k every time the light comes on when older than 3 years. The days of £700 injectors, fuel pumps, DMFs, DPFs etc etc have put paid to that.
This is coming from a guy that used to run Hi- luxes for lunar mileage, but the current model is just leagues behind the VW and Ford with regards to being up-to date and it being a nice place to be for a road trip. If I was working one, perhaps my choices would be different.
