I've been looking on Amazon for a folding shovel I can put in my under-boot storage, suitable for snow/sand/mud digging if I get stuck. Any ideas? (yes I know I can go to B&Q and get a garden spade, but I need something small to fit out of sight and still be useful - without costing a small fortune, and preferably unfolds to a semi sensible length.

Does it have to be folding - generally the pivot part is the weakness on them
I've two of these one in the back of the car and on in the 4x4

not necessarily folding, telescoping works too. As long as I can fit it under my boot space (spare wheel well area)

Military trenching tool, got 3 or 4 in various vehicles, i used one in the summer to dig 9 fence post holes then used it for a few months as my main digging tool for metal detecting in a woodland, the saw works ok but not brilliant and it's still fine.

I have one of these. You can probably find them cheaper on ebay. The weak point on this type is the riveting to the blade part, which can fail. These have 4 not 3 rivets. I've only used it once, but got me out of trouble.

Nice one Slim, this is the one I have just got. Good to see someone else likes it to, its a nice small size in my luggage compartment too.

Get a WW2 US folding entrenchment tool. About £50 and brilliant.
Not just for foxholes.
