As the title really, does anyone know if the 2ltr petrol Rav engine is a safe engine in the event of a cam belt failure ?
Not sure as im 300 miles away but just had Mrs Rob call me and think the cam belt might of gone.
She says she got into the car, tried to start it and it caught for a second and was about to fire (brilliant car always starts first turn)then just seemed to die and she says the only sound she can hear now when she turns the key is the starter turning
So if it is the cam belt is it just a replacement ? Or am I likely to have a lot of bent valves now ???

That would be a long way down my list of things to check.
If it doesn't start, then it's most likely

Fuel not getting to cylinders
Spark not happening/at right time
Starter not turning engine.
What made you think cambelt? Anything Mrs R described?

1az fe engine is chain not belt cam drive.

More likely for big ends to let go, or for the rod to get thrown through the block.

When it happened to a chums it would turn over and over and then catch and run on 3 then die

All belt driven Toyota engines are non-interference AFAIK. If yours is the 3S-FE then it is definitely non-interference smile

a 1995 2litre RAV 4 is a safe engine, manuals might tell you otherwise but in reality there safe.

Had a similar problem with a similar vintage Landcruiser which was the ECU which matches the immobiliser circuit to the ignition key to the car had failed. Starter would turn but engine wouldn’t fire.
Might be worth checking if the spare key works – if not Toyota diagnostics will clarify the problem.
